Deep Clean Of Daz's 405 Mi16.

Hello people.

 

I recently posted a thread of offering my services of a deep clean. Not Detailing, I am no pro so I don't do that. ;)

 

Anyway, Daz/Tesstuff took me up me on my offer very very quickly.

 

We had been swapping PM's on a reguar basis and I even began doing a daily countdown. I think he was looking forward to it as much as I was!

 

Saturday morning I get a message advising me that there are 'weird' marks on the car which had appeared over night. Then came 'battle scars', 'abosolutly shocking', 'algae stuff' and 'Hugeeee challenge here'.

 

I thought I may have my work cut out.

 

Time arranged at mine for 09:30. Daz arrived at 09.28. Fantastic! Even more so that he had travelled down from Leicestershire. 5 hours stuck on the various motorways coming down.

 

This is how was started.

In the wet and the pouring rain. It was chucking it down.

 

So my plan was to get cracking as I/we had a long day ahead.

 

Did we/I? No. We stood chatting about stuff for about an hour talking about stuff.

 

Eventualy, got onto Snow Foam.

It's not quite the same on white. ;)

 

That was left to dwell for 15 mins while the alloys got some attention. Although. the dwelling was about 40 minutes, as we started chatting. ;)

Next on the the petrol cap. Nearly every car on the road has a minging petrol cap.

Most of the grime is because caps do not get cleaned or wiped on a regular basis. Or the drainage holes get clogged up and not cleaned out. This one was both.

 

A good old scrub was applied and a length of garden strimmer cord was push through until it came out from under the of side rear wing. Hopefully, it will drain away but keep an eye on it Daz.

 

Wheels were next with some treatment.

Following a rinse off. I brought ou a new tool for it's debut. A clay mit.

Usually, a clay bar would be used. However, the c;ay would be the size of a 50p piece and it would take about an hour to cover every centimetre of the metal on a car.

 

With the mit it took about 20 minutes. About half an hour later, once we finished chatting, ;), we were ready for another wash.

 

Rinsed and looking better already, I thought.

This is where I saw the 'marks' which Daz had told me had appeared all over the car, over the weekend. Initially. I thought there was a social club nearby the where the car was parked and some knob had thrown coffee over the car.

 

Easy, I thought. WRONG!

 

Bright light on and let's have a look.

To be honest it was not to bad. 20 years old and 207,000 miles (if I remeber correctly).

 

A machine polish up gave us this.

Shiney, shiney = Nice.

 

However, as I was wiping of the compound, there were large streaks appearing. WTF. I have never seen this before.

 

A little spray of water and a bit more wiping and the streaks had gone. Very weird.

 

So on we go. With more chatting/putting the world to rifghts.

 

Full bonnet done. Stil weird streaking.

Thw hole car was covered with these. IT was alomost as if somebody had thrown a cup of coffee over it.

 

I think, maybe, this is a continued afer effect of the Sahara sand issue we suufered from last week. As in. Sand was spread over Daz's car. It has rained and the sand has 'pooled' in clumps and then etched itself on the paint.

As much as trying to wash off, rub off, or clay off these marks were not going anywhere.

 

It was not until machine polishing they were starting to go.

 

Now this got me thinking. Very strange foe me.

 

This paint was 'different' to what I havev I have been working on before.

 

Another 'chat' with Baz and a text to he bodyshop paint guy confirmed my thoughts.

 

This was 2 pack (?) paint with no lacquar. I have never worked on this type before!

 

All I knwe was. I would have to be cafeful.

 

I had done alittle bit of wetsanding on teh bonnet. But no more. I did not want to strikethrough the paint down to the primer. This is easily done.

 

The machine polishing did take away the coffee stains. Relief!

 

Onwards and upwards. On with the car and pictures.

Polish up with Sonax Polish wax.

Black trim treaded with Auto Finesse Revive. It does not add colour. However, over the top of the likes of Plasticare, it beads/repeals water like no none business.

It is ashame I did not get the final bit on video.

 

My 205 is wearing Exo v2. Which is an amazing water repellant thing, if you get excited by that sort of stuff.

 

I showed Daz and he liked.

 

I told him that his car will repell water like that when done.

 

Once we finished. I showed him. It did. He was 'almost' speechless.

 

Haha.

 

All in all it was a very good day. My old body is aching. I have not eaten, but for a lunch time pizza. I have had 2 beers and feel fecked, cheers Daz for the bbers. :) :) :)

 

Daz is a very good guy. He knows his Pugs and very very easy to chat to and we speak some sh!t.

 

One day I will ride in his 0-70 4.odd second nutty bastard.

Nice work.

 

I enjoy giving a car a thorough clean myself.

 

The paintwork on my mi16 was like sandpaper, and it took me nearly 3hrs just to clay.

Fantastic work as ever iPlod999, can't wait to see this in the flesh

 

I'd put money on the stains being leaves, I park my car under a tree and exactly the same happens, I think it stains the paint

Jord924.

I used a clay mit yesterday for the first time yesterday.

What a time saver!

I can't see me using 'normal' clay again.

It took about half an hour to go over Daz's beast. :)

Calvinhorse.

 

Daz said his car was parked near a tree and I'm he would have said if there were leave on the paint work.

 

The marks were literally like splashes of coffee.

 

The stains were not coming off at all until the paintwork was machined.

 

I have never seen anything like it before.

Surprising how easily they get grubby, owner before last kept it spotless! You were right to go easy on the paint as he spends his life cleaning things when he's not at work selling overpriced Photocopiers in the far east :lol:

A traditional clay bar picks up bits and pieces of dirt ingrained into the paint. Including tar spots.

 

A traditional clay bar would take a good hour or so to go over every centimetre of a car.

 

The clay mit drastically reduced this time.

 

The Junkman is a very knowledgeable guy and his youtube video and really good.

Weird, I don't like the look of that! Folding the dirt into the clay seams odd?

It is good.

 

Although, I would only use it if I were to go on to machine polish a car.

 

It can leave marring Which can seen on this Corsa I done last week.

The key is to use very light pressure.

 

With clay, and the mit you can feel the paintwork rough to start with. As you gentley glide backwards and forwards you feel the paint getting smoother and smoother.

Are tar spots not a bit of a challenge for clay? As in, it'll remove tar but requires quite a bit of effort. I'm sure you already know this, but it might be useful for others reading this, it might be better to spray affected areas with a tar spot remover first. I'd personally then use an Iron Oxide remover too. Basically dissolve as much embedded contamination first before moving on to the clay.

What's odd about it? You fold it in so that you are always using a clean surface area on the clay, with the dirt trapped inside the folded area. Once it's so heavily soiled that you can't get a clean area of clay to work with, you bin it and get a fresh piece.

Nice work! Car came up a treat. The whole process seems counter intuitive. Rubbing clay into your paint! Noooo!

 

But I did my GTi6 & Mi16 with the clay bar and the inground grit came away leaving a smooth surface. With the bar you can keep folding inwards so the grit doesn't scratch, but how do you achieve that with the mitt? Do you have to keep rinsing it?

I have not bought any dedicated tar remover yet. I imagine a track car would be heavy on the tar. Small spots that I have found on road car have been fine with clay. When working around the lower regions of a car I fold the clay more often. Along with using separate wash mitts. Lambswool on top and sides then noodle mitts on the grubby bottoms.

Use the mitt in the same way as clay, with a bit of lube. But then yes rinse in a wash bucket on a regular basis.

GLP - the dirt can be abrasive in itself, if the clay was to pick up a little stone, shard of glass, rough cut diamond you would surely rub that into your paint afterwards.

It's £22 for the poorboys clay, how many times can you use that if you keep folding the dirt into it?

You only get marring if you do it wrong, I clayed my Alhambra red MI16, didn't need a machine polish.

 

As for how long you can use it, depends how grubby the cars are, its something you learn really.

Calvin, a Bilt Hamber clay bar is £12 and a bar can be cut into quarters, so four clayings.

I do mine twice a year and it makes a massive difference before polishing and waxing.

Use plenty of lube like AG rapid detailer while claying and you'll be fine.

There will be all sorts of reasons why you get marring.

 

Quality of the clay, although some people speculate that it all comes from one place. Hard or soft clay. Yes technique or on how soft the paint it.

 

BMW paint is very hard and Honda paint is very soft.

 

 

he Corsa paintwork was very very rough. It had not been washed in 10 years. So I did have to go a bit heavy on the clay.

The one thing i've never understood with clay is why does the clay get rid of this dirt when washing doesn't? How come it doesn't come off when being washed?
