Is It Better To Break A Track Day 205 Gti That's A Bit Rough Aroun

Recommended Posts

I've been a lurker on the forums for a number of years, and have to say its a fantastic resource and by working on my own car I've learnt a huge amount. However With the arrival of my daughter I need to drop down to 1 car and will be selling my 205 shortly.

I've been looking over the car and as its needs some work to get it running as it is currently running on 2 cylinders. Am I right in thinking I would get more for the car if I sold the bits and then weighed / skip / give away whatever doesn't sell? Seems a shame to do it as the shell isn't too bad, driver side sill needs a little weld on the drivers side and panel under the headlights needs a patch or replacing. Paint work is faded and has lacquer peel on the roof.

If I go down the strip route is it best to just spend a weekend and remove as much as possible and list on the for sale forum or on the usual online auctions?

With cars increasing in value, restoring the car to a decent condition could be more profitable

may be worth putting up a better description ie is it a decent car with engine problems or a knackered old dog also standard engine or modified

Many thanks for the replies.

I'd say it's somewhere between dog and half decent. It's an F reg 1.6 gti sunroof model but with a 1.9 engine swap by the previous owner. Interior is stripped with roll cage fitted and cobra bucket seats fitted. It currently got Leda front coil overs and gaz rear dampers but I have the original front suspension fitted with lower springs and original spec rear dampers. Gear rods replaced with constella ones. Exhaust is standard bosal. When the engine ran it seemed fine except for when cold you needed to keep the revs up till warm or it would stall. It's currently only running on 2 cylinders but I know the ignition coil was looking a bit ropey with poor connections so I do have a spare to try. Starter motor and alternator were changed 2 years ago for new items. Brakes are standard 1.6 gti but new braided flexies fitted and all new standard brake lines fitted. Loom has been patched or changed in places or soldered together (multiplug above gearbox removed)

I doubt it's worth spending money to make it a decent example but I'm open to suggestions.

I'd say break it personally but then again I'm after trims and bumpers so if be a potential customer lol. I'd still honestly break though as with most things its worth more in bits

Hate to see them broken even if they are dogs.

I agree but at the end of the day it's probably worth a couple of hundred more in bits which will come in handy for my next car purchase. If it wasn't already stripped for track days (done before I bought it) it would probably be worth preserving.

Looks like I'll be making a list of bits and taking a few pictures next week then! I'll post on the for sale forum but it was a running car so most mechanicals plus a few updated bits mentioned above. 2 sets of 1.9 alloy wheels, body trim and panels (in average condition as stored outside) and a short shift adaptor ( L shape that mounts near the gearbox / subframe ). Got a couple of tachy relays, ecu's and afm's in the garage somewhere too.

Oh you need 30 posts under your name to sell in the for sale forum too

Is that the white K plate? surely you wouldn't have broken that?

I'd have been disowned and divorced before seeing that broken!

Indeed Worth about £1300 to 1500 in bits ( and the rest if i hike the prices up like some folk doo ;0)

It was on here 3 weeks and i put the feeders out before that with a couple of folks who 'wanted' a 205 but no one wants them on here cos they have them already or they just dream

If it was my main car I don't think I would break it , but never say never
