Mi16 Starting Issues

Recommended Posts

Supersport2

I bought my car as an ongoing project. It hadn't been started for around eight months.

Having got her home, engine turns over fine, tacho bounces on cranking. There was no spark, so ignition module changed, new spark plugs too, so we have a spark. Fresh fuel in, but the pump doesn't prime or make a sound, and the fuel gauge doesn't move. Relays in the engine bay click over, so the question is, where do I look now?

I've had a spare fiuel pump, plugged it in and still no sound of priming. I've cleaned all the earths and checked all relays are seated and there are no fuses blown!!

Help!!!

Have you checked for voltage at the fuel pump plug and the relays?

Based on what you've checked already I'd be looking at the wiring to the relays next, it's common for the wires to snap at the crimps on the relay connectors on Mi16 looms.

... or the relays themselves to fail thanks to the typical exposed position that they're fitted in most 205 Mi16 conversions.

Standard 4 pin green relays are fine as replacements.

I've had the two relays checked, that are situated behind the drivers headlamp, they're working fine according to the auto electrician. Are there any others I need to look at??

If you've got power going in and out of the relay and you've checked the fuel pumps earth you either have two dead fuel pumps or a break in the wire between the relay and the fuel pump.

Have you checked for voltage at the fuel pump plug? If you don't have a multimeter you could run a temporary live feed direct to the pump to see if it works or not.

Looks like no power to the fuel pump!!

Checked the fuel pump fuse? Depending on the Mi16 loom used, there might be two - one on the loom near the relays and one in the glovebox (the blue 15 amp one nearest the driver)

Fuses are fine.

Can I clarify the location of the fuel relays?

The two behind the drivers headlamp. Is there another??

The fuel pump relay is one of those two behind the headlights.

After much messing about, it appears the earth was the problem. Heavy corrosion around the earth block!!

Check the simple things first!!!

At least the engine runs now! Lol!

Yes, always check the basics.

You did say you'd cleaned all the earths which is why nobody suggested checking them

Which one do you mean? The fuel pump ground in the boot behind the tail light I assume?

I'd cleaned the earths in and around the gearbox!! But yes, in the boot. There non of it left tbh, a bit of metal work coming up I think!!
