Xs Ma Gearbox Making Suspect Noise

Recommended Posts

bazil_205gti

Hi

i have a 205 xs the solex carb version think the gearbox could be on its way out start up from cold on tickover sounds fine but when driven and then put in neutral slight knocking noise, does not go away when the clutch is engaged but when revs pick up noise speeds up then vanishes. does anyone have any recomendations? also which boxes could i replace it with? as im not sure what other engines had the same ratio gearbox on.

thanks for looking

Matt

If it's the original xs box it's the same as an Citroen axgt, they are getting hard to find so maybe worth taking it out ASAP with the intention of getting it rebuilt

I used a Citroen Saxo 1.4 Furio box on mine and it was ok, nothing like as close as the xs but sportier than most

You DONT want a Saxo vtr box, very long

Very early xs' had a different mounting bolt pattern

Might well be the diff, often the first weak point to go on an ma box, as Calvin said, its best to pull it out asap before the whole box is scrap.

The Roland Garros used the same box, ma sport gearset and something like a 4.26 final drive.

106 xsi iirc is the same ratios and fd.

If you have the earlier bellhousing pattern then you could swap internals from a later box afaik, not a difficult box to do, just time consuming and a bit of a faff.

:/ only trouble is i need it for work may have to look for another box asap to refurb and take it easy with this one. are the diffs interchangable in the ma boxes?

Make sure it fits the Alloy block and not the iron block which will get you by, But most MA diffs fall apart so if the original one its done very well.

These box's are a right pain to strip compared with the BE box, But even the new ish Mini's still use them

Sort of, There are 2 types of diff like in the BE, Not sure which models got what but as the crownwheel is shrunk on like a ring gear on a flywheel changing them needs some very good heat
