Cheers PB. (Was over an hour trying to fit the down pipe btw....murder!)

That's it 100% completed and i've been out a run for an hour. Seen a puff of smoke coming from under bonnet but realised it was the speedo cable getting roasted on the manifold, quick cable tie and it was fixed.

A few observations.

The new rad has made a big improvement over my old one, it cools back down to 1/4 from 3/4 in about half a mile, previously would have taken an age.

I can feel more vibration when at idle with the new top mount, nothing major but i notice it.

Kind of wish i had put fancy cams in it....aw well, next time.

Now what?...........

Enjoy it until the inevitable throttle bodies purchase, just like every 16v owner!

Myself included.

What make pump?

I think it was KWP?..... and i found out it wasn't part of the Gates kit, i had ordered both at once....... nearly 2hrs in a ECP branch letting them sort it out after i refused to sort it out.

Got problems with my exhaust, for one reason or another it just doesn't fit as well as it did prior to taking engine out (which wasn't brilliant anyway.) But now my downpipe flange to manifold is blowing a little, the exhaust is vibrating off the big gear linkage rod in 5th iirc, and it doesn't reach the middle hanger.

Took it to a local place and they looked at it and said we can't weld stainless so you'll need to go somewhere else.

I've got three options i think:

Go to a specialist exhaust builder and try get mine adjusted

Get an exhaust builder to build me a full system

or try find a second hand system from someone on here, which probably would require tweaking anyway?

I "think" my system at the moment is, a 306 downpipe that's been modified and decat'd, on to a 2.252 s/s middle box with pipe each side, on to a fairly new but degrading quickly Klarus back box.

What say ye?

Get your manifold and down pipe to Miles (I appreciate its the wrong end of the country) and get him to modify them to the correct angle.

He did mine and it went together perfect.

Hi PB, easier said than done i'm afraid. The DP/manifold parts married up well prior to engine out/in. I'm thinking that the engine isn't sitting exactly where it once did, and highly likely due to the new mount.... why, i dunno, but also, when i look under the bonnet leaning over looking down on the backside of the engine, i kind of think the engine looks as though it's sitting nearer the bulkhead than it previously did..... a bit too close for comfort on my matrix pipes.

And on my matrix pipes, i ordered these today

http://www.modellingelectronics.co.uk/products/cable-tie-mounts.php

I have metal cable ties, and these fixings should allow me to lift my pipes out of harms reach........ just hope the bodywork has some ferrous properties to allow the magnet to work. I've seen a different manufacturers used before on jobs i've been on holding up fire extinguishers!

I maybe should loosen all the mounts off and give the engine a good rumble and fix it where it wants to sit and take it from there.

How's yours going btw?.....

Can adjust to bottom mount, cut and weld or extend to alter the tilt, only a very slight adjustment mind you.

What's the reason for not adjusting the bottom mount?

Stripped the exhaust off it yesterday and refitted it from scratch, it's looking a lot better, good clearances etc, but still think the mani/dp might be blowing. I had fitted a new gasket at this joint previously and it seems to be a smidgen thicker, which maybe is stopping the pipes marrying up nice.

Also notice that the exhaust bolt washer is/was rubbing on the gear linkage....... it's an easy fix but wondering if anyone has had this issue?

There is a little bit of play on the little lever on the sub-frame, is this known as the quadrant bush?..... if there was no play i don't think there wouldn't be any rubbing.

that doesn't look right, have you got a pic looking up front the front of the subframe?

What's the reason for not adjusting the bottom mount?

driveshaft angles and oil pickup issues, plus clearance issues elsewhere, there really is no need with an appropriately angled exhaust manifold.

I haven't but i'll get one tomorrow night. My gear changes are fine/good, and that pic is from before I took the exhaust off and refitted, which seems to be a wee bit better.... but the washer thing is still very close to the rod.

What are you thinking might be not right?

So after a few beers i've just read through my own thread and the trials and tribulations from when i first started with this car. I've learned a lot and looking back over the thread, there's no way i could have done it without sheer determination and the help of people on here, and as mentioned before, Welshpug and also Anthony who have always answered my queries on various threads outwith this one...... plenty beers are due if we ever meet.

So here it sit's running as it should, untapping, non-water leaking, with a years ticket on it, and all washed up..... and it makes me happy :) and secretly quite proud

IMO it's a thing of beauty!..... i usually keep it tucked quietly away when not in use.

Had my car on track a few weeks ago and it performed amazingly, so did the driver! but, it's too much/painful putting it through it.

The same day, I got 5 or 6 laps in a friends rally prepared 106 (16V), and it felt very good. On a few laps he tried to catch me on the windy stuff when I was in mine, but he couldn't albeit it was his first time out in the car and on that track, but I still pulled away no probs on the straights.

So I decided to get an out and out track car. Long story short, £260 for a saxo VTS, caged, bucket seats, fancy exhaust, bla bla bla, but not a straight panel on it, and needing a fair bit of welding on the inner arches and behind the front wheels/floor. It's running very nice and looks to be quite fast.

Since then (a week ago), I 've got a VTS engine for it and there has been a full brand new suspension set up donated to me and i'm going to spend a few months getting it the way I want it. Gonna try make it solid and as light as possible.

Here it is when I collected it. Maybe someone will recognise it from Cadwell Park as I think it was used there regularly a few years ago.

It's going to be a bit of a scrap heap challenge.... every bolt is rusty, nothing comes off easy, there's not one straight panel on it, and I think Charles Atlas must have tightened the wheels. But the car is all there and I like it and I know what's needing done, and I'm a man with a plan. Very surprised how bad it is all round compared to my 205.

few pics of what I've done this week after washing it, removing stickers, and getting rid of several big spiders that had made home in it.... and I mean big.

Here's the new engine/box for it.... only 51k miles on it (supposedly).

It's a later engine with a 3-plug loom, so i'm going to be changing it to single plug and run older management. Supposedly this engine is more set up for emissions, and older management will be less hastle. I've looked at both management options and the splicing etc required, and it seems straight forward enough having done the GTI6 myself.

Forgot to mention, when looking at the buyers slip for the car when returning home I noticed the reg plate "T63 JMB", got a valuation of it for £1850!! so I've put it up on an internet reggy site for £800 hoping to shift it, but anything is a bonus..... there must ne a John Michael Baxter out there somewhere 8)

Maybe I'm just cynical, but do any of these fairly normal 6/7 character number plates actual sell for anything like the valuation that is often attached to them? I hear plenty of people claiming that they have a plate that has been valued at £xxx and that they're going to sell it, but I've never heard of anyone actually successfully managing to sell one...

On a vaguely related note, I was following an Aston DB6 up the motorway last week that had the plate "S7" - I pondered whether the car or the plate was worth more...

Saw a very mundane hatchback in London a few years ago with something like A2 as the reg. That really has to be a mental car-reg value ratio!
