Bx 1.6 Be3 Gearbox On Cti 1.6. Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

The Citroen BX 1.6 BE3 gearbox has the same gears as a GTI 1.9 box, but with shorter 1st and 2nd gears. Has anyone tried that on the a CTI/GTI 1.6? I imagine it would make for a better highway car. I have the chance to get one of these boxes for 30 Euro. Any thoughts?

Any box for €30 is worth buying, just for parts :)

He's got a GTI 1.9 box for the same price, I am thinking of getting both anyway.

Wouldn't mind a 1.9 box at €30 :(

I think one of these two boxes will end up in my CTI, depending on condition. The longer gears will be more in line with the convertible's cruising nature.

Yes it does, it has shorter final drive. The spacing between 1st and 2nd can be irritating depending on what you use the car for and what engines fitted though.

I did some computer simulations for for car with the 1.9 box and also talked at length with the guy who is selling the boxes and decided against it, at least for now. The 1.6 engine isn't particularly torquey and jumping to a 1.9 box with longer gears would probably be OK for highway driving, but in town, or once I face a hill on the highway I'd be sucking anyway. The guy also had a full GTI subframe and control arms and I think I'll be getting those to upgrade my CTI. I'll have to source some non-GTI, non-CTI steering knuckles to go with the drive shafts, and improve the CTI's handling that way. He also said he might have a GTI 1.9 head in another storage site (he has three 205s and parts all over the place), and he could sell that to me, bump up my HP with the bigger valves. Then perhaps add a Schrick Road camshaft and make that CTI scream...

How about just fitting a longer 5th gear (0.757) out of an Mi16 or a diesel?

Swapping 5th gear should be fairly easy... as compared to the other gears anyway.
