Wishbone Bushes; Special Tool Needed?

Hi All

 

Been trying to press in my new wishbone bushes but am not having any luck. When using a socket to press them in it just cuts into the rubber. Looking at the bushes it looks like Peugeot might use a special tool with 6 raised sections on it? What do you guys use?

I just use the flat faced plug on my press. This pushes the rubber through slightly then pushes on the metal sleeve.

I use an impact socket, they're thicker walled than most.

I pressed all mine in, using the flat face of the press and low and behold I knacked them all, by deforming the inner tube slightly, which didn't come to light until it was time to install them.

 

Once I bought new bushed I used a socket which fitted just around the rim to push them in and all was fine.

 

Good luck with them, I think I have a picture of this which I'll dig out and post

Dave, have you got all of the old bush out? Remember there's a metal sleeve on the bush that might still be in the wishbone, so obviously until that's removed the new bush won't go in.

 

But last time I just used a tool called a "Fenton". Combine one "Fenton" with obscene amounts of "duck oil" and it's smooth sailing

Keep doing that but everytime I refresh it goes back to.mobile site, it's annoying to say the least.

 

On topic what press are you using and is it possible to use heat? If the press doesn't budge them I normally use oxy-acetylene to burn the rubber out then cut the outer sleeve them hammer it out.

Thanks for all the replies and advice chaps, we just pressed them in with a flat surface and they went straight in.

Hope you didn't use normal grease to get them in!

A slight smear is fine as it doesn't go on the rubber.

I found mold release spray or silicone spray to help alot getting them in.

I used a 2 inch square piece of softwood ( pine ) on the face of the bush when I pushed some in a while back . It squashes to the domed shape of the bush and spreads the force equally . I use a vice to provide the force and file the sharp edge off the hole so the bush goes in nicely without picking up .

Seat the bushe slightly then grab the wishbone and smash full pelt on a solid bit of eood/rail way sleeper.

 

Worked for me countless times doesn't mark the bushe either
