What needs doing, is it just tidying or more major work?

Nice is it one of those that has the gearbox as the sump?

It was sitting in a wood yard since 2005 and was dry stored,so things are gonna be seized,

Engine a bit hesitant when revving and ticks over at 1400rpm

So will go through it slowly and see what needs attention

Bodywork ok, minimal rust

Will add more pics soon

don't know as of yet,its has the reverse next to 1st,not had much time to look at it yet, just put in my garage

brakes are non existent,it stutters when revving then revs freely after 2000rpm,don't know what that could be,there is surface rust on the bottom of the rear quarter, opened the boot expecting to find nothing and there are loads of tools in he back, seats have no tears, which is unusual

it has the clocks that are not standard, not sure why this is?will put some pics up now, maybe someone can answer that one lol

I saw this on ebay. Look forward to seeing updates once you've done some work on it. What do you think will need doing for the MOT?

front brakes need work, probably strip down, engine needs servicing, won't really know until i get a good look at it, don't look to shabby to be honest

it was dry stored which has helped with corrosion, only time will tell i suppose, will get underneath and have a good look

in the description it was waxoyled underneath then stored so hopefully rust is not an issue

i did look in the boot and inner wings and all rust free so i'm lucky in that respect

No GTIs had that gearbox, that was just fitted to early base models with the Talbot 'suitcase' engine.

AFAIK those clocks are correct for the very early Phase 1's.

That should be the early 105hp 1.6 engine too at that age, which must be getting pretty scarce now! The lack of breather pipe on the cam cover looks to confirm that too.

Indeed, at a glance it all looks quite original :)

Yes the clocks are original and even the seats which are the first things to go

By the interior I would say that this has to be late 85 or early 86 model. The dash is late ph1 (early ph1s hat that textyle look), new style gear knob, non-leather steering wheel, but old style stalks and old style instrument cluster support that and look original.

The B registration means it was registered between Aug '84 and July '85.

I would think that at least checking, if not replacing, the cam belt as a precaution would be a good idea. It would not be good to loose the engine...

P.S. nice find

Nice little find, I had my eye on this as it's only up the road from me in Carmarthen, didn't notice it was such an early model!

The rust put me off a bit, how bad are the rear panels?

went to the pug today to sort out the hesitant running, so i went and bought new leads, dizzy, rotor and plugs, replaced them and fired it up and now runs sweet

revs through the range fine and no more hesitant lumpy running

noticed the radiator is goosed so that will need replacing, left it running to see if the fan kicks in at temperature and it worked perfectly

will also change cam belt and tensioner and water pump for good measure

still ticks over very high, now it ticks over near 2000rpm, any ideas?

My guess would be it needs a very good clean out and check for air leaks as a place to start mate. Some of that rubber is bound to have perished over the years.

There is a lot of useful info on idle problems on here that helped me a lot.

I had an absolute nightmare with my 1.9 where it was not only sitting at 2000 at idle, it would also cut out for a good twenty minutes of a journey. I think the general consensus was that there was an air mixture problem, one thing I did know for sure was how much petrol it would get through!

Thanks for the tip, but for now going to concentrate on the timing belt, water pump, rad and sort out the brakes

Looking forward to doing this, gonna be a slow project.

I looked the gear rods today and I was surprised that they look new,all the zinc plating is there, a bit wobbly, is there any place I can get the nylon parts that sit on the ball? Or do I have to get new rods?
