Brake Pipe Flaring Advice Please...

So just sat down to tackle making a replacement brake pipe for the drivers rear drum brake to flexi.

 

Got a draper flaring kit but never used one before.

 

Can someone just run me through what I need to do as Im getting confused.

 

Are both flared ends supposed to be the same or is one different and if so which one as I cut the pipe off right next to the nipples to get a socket on when I removed it to reduce the risk of rounding them.

Got a picture of the tool you got?

 

The cheapest ones tend to be hard to make good flares with.

Like this one for example:

You just need to find out the lenght you need the pipe, cut to correct length, put nipple onto pipe, make flare.

Repeat for the other end and bolt to car.

 

Both ends are usually the same bubble flare.

Ye thats what my kit looks like. Its a draper one.

 

But I know my dads used a similar kit hes owned for years to make pipes with before. He did about 3 or 4 fr my Scirocco.

 

Finally figured out last night its a bubble flare I want after getting confused by the instructions taking about single and double flares...

 

The problem I'm getting is the flare is coming out more like a popper. Its flat on the end...

 

Ive taken it all to work and one of the guys is gonna have a go at making them, if not hes got a proper garage tool he's going to bring in.

Yes. that cheap one will also make a lot of marks around the pipe where it clamps it, not htat it is a problem I guess, but doesn't look too good.

 

I can recommend this tool, it's very easy to get good flares with it. Costs a bit more though.

I struggled for a long time with one of those flaring tools. Mine was made by Laser but was identical. Getting the flare square and even, and hence sealing properly, was virtually impossible, I found. The tipping point came the the other week where I spent over an hour trying to get one decent flare, so I decided to look for something new as I was simply wasting time. I found this on eBay:

And I can tell you, it is the best £33 I have spent in a long time! It makes a perfect flare every time, very easily. So my recommendation is to chuck your old one in the bin (keep the pipe cutter though ;) and buy the powerhand device, you won't regret it :)

I think my dad got it from the tool guy at his work. Either way I've only had it since Christmas so if it doesn't do what it should I'll get a refund and get that one your on about.

Typically the male unions on peugeots use the middle flare, so you need to use the non convex side.

both ends of that particular pipe use the same unions and flare, there are some that use an M12 union into the wheel cylinder but I don't think a 205 does, it's been a while since I faffed with a 205 on drums!

I've had the pipe made up at work.

 

The only thing I have noticed is I seem to have the SAE unions.

 

I have had two pipes made one with sae flares and one with din.

 

Does the 205 definitely use DIN and if so which am I best using to get the best seal.

 

As the copper is so soft I was thinking it will just crush to the shape the female union anyway so using the sae flare would be best as it fills the curved portion of the male union under the flare?

 

Does that make any sense?

I can recommend this one as well- literally got one last week off ebay!

 

I spent ages messing about with different flaring tools and struggled to consistently good flares; this tool is absolutely unbelievable for the price, absolutely spot on single and double flares every time- swearing and throwing things round the workshop has decreased massively since I got it!

That too looks very much like the one the guy at my work brought in.

 

Except his could be used for all different pipe sizes and flare types and is also strong enough to do Kunifer and other hard pipes.
