First Drive In The Xs.

Recommended Posts

Okay, been out for a run in XS and it is really quick, especially if you keep it above 4000rpm, I assume that's the second choke working well :D. There are a couple of issues, the revs died momentarily coming out of a corner, it leans more than I am used to, there is a knocking noise from the front and the steering needs aligning, other than that it is pretty noisy from the standard exhaust and there is a ton of driveline shunt which compliments the lack of synchro on third gear, crunching everytime .

Is the lean normal? Is the driveline shunt normal? Where is the knocking coming from? (I know, pushing it a bit with the last one)

Thanks, Calvin.

Loved my old xs, should never had sold it.

Where is the knocking coming from?

Front suspension area. I have replaced most of it apart from the uprights and the rack. It does seem to be lively.

Likewise to Ed, I adored my XS, great cars. The engine does come alive over 4000rpm.

And yes in standard trim they do roll:

Great cheap upgrade to get rid of some of the roll is GTI rear ARB, I paid £20 for one a few years ago for mine, well worth it.

The lack of power coming out of corners is a fault with the carb..

It feels like fuel surge yes?

I don't know the actual cause of the problem but I know mine stopped doing it when I changed the carb.

Get yourself a baker bm bottom engine mount and a good short shift, COMPLETES an Xs :)

Evening gents, got to get used to the roll because car needs to stay standard for sprinting and hill climbing, Calvin, feels like fuel starvation, just dies momentarily as soon as I get back on the gas, only on a really tight and fast righthander, fine on left handers.???

Would like the shift and mount, but got to get round the crunchy third gear, may do it all when I change the box.

Calvin.

Might be worth rebuilding the carb, they aren't known for being particularly reliable. I found mine had a split float in it which caused it to run badly, used to be able to get rebuild kits for about £20.

Sounds like a ball. And welcome to the TU engined 205!

Driveline shunt is going to tired engine mounts, the knock from the front could likely be a drive shaft as they suffer with them, not surprising 3rd is on it's way out as the MA boxes aren't the strongest of things. Standard they are quiet noisy, both from the carb and single silencer exhaust system.

The rebuild kits costs roughly twice £20! But quite easy to do yourself.

The 954cc - 1124cc middle section is straight through with a single back box.

I found with the single box system they have more mid range power

Not offensively loud either

Ill second that,i had exactly the same symptom with mine, coming off a roundabout and it would die,was a split float.Stripping the carb is straight forward and doesnt take very long

Have been out of town with the XS today, no car has a right to accelerate from 60 to 70 as quick as that with only 85 bhp and I've taken off the sports exhaust and the K&N filter! Reckn we have traced the knocking to the anti rollbar bushes. Something else to fix. <_<
