Bodywork Help - O/s Jacking Point

Has anyone got any ideas about dealing with this crushed jacking point.

Since this photo the car has been dipped and primed.

 

Any ideas/help will be appreciated.

I can't give you an experts answer but I looked into this myself as mine are the same. One technique I've read is to weld some short bits of M6 or M8 studding strategically in the area and use a slide hammer to pull the dent out.

 

I can't say I've tried this but it sounds plausible.

Thats not a jacking point :lol:

 

The technique mentioned above it commonly used by bodyshops, not sure if it would work on floor metap though.

No that's just my terminology not knowing what to call it properly, as it's been used as a jacking point.

 

Sounds like a common thing.

 

 

Is there a replacement panel for it??

 

I was thinking of getting it cut out, put back in shape and rewelding it....bad idea/good idea?

I think its just a floor reinforcement, not so much as to stop it collapsing, but to stop it deforming upwards from wrong use of jacking or grounding the car possibly?

 

I need to sort it out on my cti as well as mine gone a bit holey, unusually though the floor above it is immaculate, not a whiff of the brown stuff

Not uncommon for sure .. i've seen this kind of "damage" on fair few 205's , cause ? - grease monkey business while jacking the car up on the two post lift using that area as a support rather than the corners of the sills .

 

Anyways , it's called floor stiffener . It's spot welded around floor and chassis rail , as the name says serves to stiffen up/brace the lower bodywork structure where the chassis rails joins with the floor and also it's rear end mounting position for entire front suspension ie. the subframe .

 

As it's double skin panel and a bit rigid as a whole section , hammering from the inside trough the floor base wont make any progress (tried myself with BFH - no go !) , yet pulling it out from underneath with bigger sliding hammer might do some correcting effect but i somehow doubt if it would be worthwhile bothering with that as it's a bit thick so not as easy to bend/shape like the rest of the body panels ..

 

I wouldn't recommend cutting (properly , needs to be removed by drilling the spot welds and spot welded back) it out for reshaping purposes and welding back in after reshape cos , welding it back in center could be problematic (especially if you stretch it further by hammering while trying to get the original shape ) as it has holes trough it for mounting rear sides of the subframe and if not welded precisely in center onto the floor base and around the chassis rail it'll move the body attaching holes for the rear side of the subframe off and you'll have problems with bolting the subframe back trough the holes in the floor stiffener and up trough the floor base .. if you do both sides and if that ends up inprecise it'll mess up the entire front suspension alignment

 

 

Personally , i'd leave it be .. if it doesn't bother you much , after all it's down under the car so it's not as "cosmetic issue" as it would be a dent in the doors or similar no one will see it .

I got a offside panel for somebody on this last year, Brian J rings a bell.

 

but no nearsides, be careful with those jacks lads ;)

Andy, I dont do cynical, it's the "BFO dent" that made me laugh, genuinely..

As i said mine has a small rot hole in it, when i mot'd it last year the guy said cant let that go so I asked him how I should tackle it and he said just filler it in. I was gobsmacked but he said because its not the actual floor it didn't matter. I plated over it, filler indeed :lol:

I think nearly every 205 I have owned has had at least one dented floor stiffener. It's never bothered me.
