I Bought A 205 Gti Yesterday, Wanna See?

Recommended Posts

AdamF

Hi all,

I got this little beauty yesterday, really happy with it. Its my first 205 so I have lots of little questions regarding it, I've tried swatting up a bit but theres still alot to know. Wasn't quite sure where to post this so please go easy on me if its in the wrong spot.

Its a 1989 1.9 in black. Had a full engine rebuild at 125k (invoice to prove) as well as tonnes of paperwork for everything else.

Here's some pics:

So let the questions begin!

Would I be right in saying its a phase 1.5? It has clear front indicators but orange tail lights, is this correct?

What will the engine code number be for this year? Its also got the gearbox where reverse top left, is this correct?

Can someone explain the clock dials to me?

I think oil pressure top left (working) and fuel bottom left (working) right?

Not sure what top right is (doesn't seem to move at all) and bottom right is water temp? Water temp defo goes up and down but starts a 1/8th of the way up even from cold, is this right?

The front and rear windscreen sprayers don't work, the rear motor definitely whines but the button on the end of the stalk is very stiff and doesn't seem to depress. Common problem? Much of a fix|? Do I fill up the rear wiper sprayer in the boot?

The clutch bites well but the process of depressing it is quite hard work, to get it into 1st it has to be pressed that bit harder. Wasnt sure if thats a clutch cable issue or thats just the joy of owning an 80s car!

Want to replace the aero blade wipers with stock items, I imagine that will be straight forward.

I struggled to fill it up at the petrol station yesterday, I had to have pump trigger at half way otherwise fuel would back up, are they slow to take fuel in or was I doing it at the wrong angle?!

Its got a private plate, I want to lose that and put it back to standard, does anyone have any experience with this? Ballache? Cost etc?

Plan is to enjoy it and drive it, keep it nice and original.

At some point it would be nice to find someone who could carry out a few tasks on it, I live in North London so if anyone has the knowledge, tools and time to carry out a few tasks for me (I work abroad alot so don't!) make yourself known and we can have a chat about making it worth your while.

I think thats it for the minute, oh and it's Adam by the way.

Thanks

Welcome, nice car.

Have a search through the various forums on here and the main site as your questions have been asked and answered many times.

Remember it's a 20+ year old car!!

Miles

I'm sure that belonged to a mate of mine a while back, He sold it on Ebay for not a huge amount. My memory seems to think thou I maybe completely wrong and getting mixed up with another one it was a CAT D but this would show on the log book.

Hi guys,

The glass has the original f reg etched in it and Ive got the certificate/paperwork for the private plate so hopefully I can switch it back.

Its all clear on the log book Miles, the owner before the previous owner is a big 205 enthusiast apparently. The chap who sold a Dimma to Mr Dimma recently I was told.

Again really happy with it!

Adam

Yes & no, it is a phase 1.5 on an F plate(first registered Aug 88-Jul 89) but the front indicators should be orange for this age of car.

What will the engine code number be for this year? Its also got the gearbox where reverse top left, is this correct?

Engine code should be D6B iirc, gearbox is correct (Be1).

Can someone explain the clock dials to me?

Oil pressure top left, fuel bottom left, oil temp top right (usually takes a while to come up (10 mins +, especially at this time of year) & fuel gauge bottom right.

The front and rear windscreen sprayers don't work, the rear motor definitely whines but the button on the end of the stalk is very stiff and doesn't seem to depress. Common problem? Much of a fix|? Do I fill up the rear wiper sprayer in the boot?

Rear wash is done from twisting the end of the stalk & yes, the reservoir is in the boot.

Front wash / wipe is by pulling the stalk towards you.

The clutch bites well but the process of depressing it is quite hard work, to get it into 1st it has to be pressed that bit harder. Wasnt sure if thats a clutch cable issue or thats just the joy of owning an 80s car!

Part of the joy of having the Be1 gearbox but with new clutch fork bushes on the gearbox it shouldn't be that bad when its correctly adjusted.

The difficulty engaging first could be due to play in the linkages, again easily fixed usually.

Want to replace the aero blade wipers with stock items, I imagine that will be straight forward.

Very straight forward but be sure to get the right sizeas I've seen many 205's with mis-matched wiper blades, unlike many modern cars they are both thte same size (18" iirc)

I struggled to fill it up at the petrol station yesterday, I had to have pump trigger at half way otherwise fuel would back up, are they slow to take fuel in or was I doing it at the wrong angle?!

Shouldn't be that bad but also not as easy as a modern car for some strange reason. it is possible the breather is blocked preventing any air being cleared out of the tank so it has to come back out of the filler neck.

Nice looking car from the pics you've posted though.

Difficulty engaging first gear often means the clutch cable needs adjusting.

Sorry Adam to hijack your post.

I have replied to your PM, thanks.

This is the reply I sent to Allen. I will start up my own thread soon.

Hi Allen.

Its just an idea running through my mind at the moment. It is only a hobby for me and I am certainly no pro.

Although, it would be a great way to meet like minded 205 people.

I had a £2000 engine bill just after Christmas, head gasket went and replaced all oil/water pipes, camshaft, new head, timing.........and all the rest that goes with it. I had to raid the family savings for that so if I can claw a bit of money back that would be great!

I'll post up a proper thread soon and see what the interest is and keep you at the top of the list.

Regards.

Glen.
