Whats The Best Shoe String Budget Xu Engine?

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

Bit of a hypothetical question for you lot.

Imagine you have a car with an empty engine bay, except a gearbox that fits an XU engine, and £100(or less) to buy the engine.

what would be your choice?

preferably decent power/torque and reliable.

engine must be standard(ish), and not need hundreds spending on it to get it to work. The key here is to be as cheap as possible, with the most bang for buck

There's a reason I'm asking, but I don't want to let on just yet, just a few opinions

Cheers :)

Has to be xu engine? Surely a J4RS? Although converting a car will cost a fair bit more.

Has to be XU (for reasons that may become apparent later.

Forgot to mention, can you include what car the engine is from (my xu engine code knowledge is limited!)

I'd go with a 1.6 or 1.9 as they're cheap as chips and you won't have to worry about conversion parts.

1.9, 1.6 pistons, little cam and boom...

See I did initially think a 1.6 or 1.9, but a quick scour about and they seem to be a little bit thin on the ground these days. Either that or people have realised that its a waste of time selling an engine on ebay etc. whats the going rate for a complete working engine from a 1.6/1.9 these days?

thin on the ground? I have several in many pieces here.

As Dan said, a particularly simple recipe of 1.6 pistons in a 1.9 and a lumpy stick can give damn good results, granted you do need throttle bodies to get the best out of it, but when you try one you'd wonder why people bother with a gti6.

The last engine I picked up was £80 (XU9JA) complete from eBay

This was about 3-4 weeks ago.

I appear to have failed to do my research a bit here! I've never had an Xu car, just lots of TUs other wise I'd probably have something lying around.

Regarding the lumpy stick and pistons, that does sound good, but at this stage it needs to be literally straight plug and play

Agreed .. 1.9 with 1.6 pistons , three angle seats along with some head work , aftermarket cam , 1.6 flywheel , 1.6 or some custom box ... with properly adjusted fueling/ignition this one really goes like a stink ! s*** load of torque trough all the rev range till the limiter , excellent acceleration too , with such mods it kinda feels a little bit like turbocharged/supercharged engine by the nature .. it just pulls like a mad man .

Light , cheap to build and maintain ..

I have similar spec. engine , and even with the OE inlet (a bit reworked but still OE) it's really nippy engine , haven't tried gti6 conversion but did two mi16'a which seemed to me pretty disappointing , a bit "gutless" on the lower/mid revs when compared to such modified 1.9 8v ... also did an hill climb road race chasing mi16 which simply couldn't get away and was just slowing me down up front not willing to let me pass him by !

Xud9te out of a 306

1.9 diesel turbo basically.

The right mods on a T2 turbo will see you 130-150 bhp

Change the turbo and the world's your oyster

I'll soon be putting on a TD04 turbo off of a subaru and I'll be looking at 180-200bhp with the right supporting mods

Oh you'll want a Bosch pump!

Another bonus is cheap fuel (veg oil).

I get it for 73p a litre at the mo

I like the sound of the diesel, as that would match the current tank on the vehicle, and the ratios of the gearbox in question. And veg oil definitely fits in with the low budget requirement!

You've got one of which Omega? I wouldn't need the gearbox, just the complete engine (ancillaries, loom, manifold, hoses etc)

It seems then that the contenders are 1900 gti, or xud9te so far.

Are they both fairly simple in the wiring department? not too concerned about getting the warnings light etc working yet, just to get it fired up, are they as simple as positive, ground and ignition and away you go?

I forgot to mention that simplicity is key here. shame I cant use a carbed TU for the simplicity factor, but it wont work with the gearbox

straight 1.9 8 valver is the best bet then, get the loom with it and as long as its a gti shell it'll be a case of plugging or joining the wires up.

Its probably best to go on the assumption that theres no wiring in the vehicle , so all wiring would be from scratch

how much would you want for just the complete engine without the box omega?

Buy a donor complete gti6 / xsara, strip it. Sell everying except the engine, free engine and spend your 100 quid on consumables.

Clearly won't be the best conversion out there on 100 quid, but if you put the effort in and was clever it would be quick and reliable, and better than most conversions.

I was going to say a 1.8 16v engine as they are cheap as chips, but then you said you have a diesel box which would be pretty poor on a petrol car with those ratios. By keeping the box, you are limiting yourself to a diesel really

buying a vts/gti6 would be ideal, but unfortunately with 3 cars and an 8 foot trailer already on the single car drive (and the garage is too full of dismembered motorbikes to get a car in) that rules that out (that and the initial outlay)

I may well get in touch omega if i don't come across anything else, seeing as you're not far from me

I'm going to have to come clean a bit here to end a bit of the confusion regarding the box etc

The reason for the gearbox choice, is its a RWD gearbox!

Reason for the lack of wiring is that this isnt going in a 205 (or even a peugeot for that matter)

its going on another little project which currently boasts about 32bhp, hence not being too bothered about massive power just yet. The idea is to get an engine in that runs, get through the innevitable teething problems and then upgrade at a later date if needed

I might even put a build thread up on here when I'm a little further along, but its very early days yet
