Just fitted a set to my 1.6 Gti, and I know it's subjective, and the unknown pads I took out were probably shagged, but blimey they have made a huge difference!! Still not going mad as technically only just bedded them in, but I don't remember the old ones stopping this hard from cold. Proof is in the pudding this Sunday as I am doing my first MSA sprint in the 1600cc standard unmodified class ( only mods permitted are decent list 1a tyres ( Michelin PE3 is what I chose ), brake pad material and manifold-back exhaust ( mine is the original ). Up against probably C2 & Saxo VTS's, lsd-equipped MX5s, 106 Rallyes & Gti's, and Honda Vtecs ( powerful! ) so I am gonna fly the flag for the ole' 205s! Hoping the light weight and nimble handling will make up for the inevitable power defecit.

I found them slightly dead on the first few prods of the pedal each day compared to o.e pads, but very decent thereafter, certainly good enough for my driving (i'm not hard on brakes, but far from a dawdler :lol: )

There is a bedding in procedure on the instructions in the box.

 

Three stops from 30 to rest

Three from 50 to rest

Thee for 70 to rest.

 

Not heavy just progressive. Then drive round and let them cool. After that normal use should be fine

You may also want to swap to the girling calipers, 1.9 hubs and drivesafts, as the calipers, whilst heavier and narrower offset, are less prone to flex, take a bigger. And possibly disc if I recall

Bedding them in properly is very important, I've had to bin mintex pads in the past through not doing it properly :(

As above if you bed them in properly they can work very well, I have even run Mintex 1166 on the road and with them bedded in properly they work fine from cold and just get better and better as they warm up.

that is one s*ite bedding procedure above :)

 

you need to approach it in 3 stages.

 

Material transfer

heat cycles

Fade

 

Spend some time driving at slow speeds slowing down gently - material transfer to disc

Then start using more pedal effort to slow the car from higher speeds. You will feel the pedal force/travel change alot and smell the brakes as well; may need to cool for a while. Repeat this ramping up to hard decels, always cool inbetween; never use abs, dont lock up, dont stop completly with brake pressure applied.

Once fully cooled again do some high speed fade until pedal goes long and then fully cool - will take up to 10 miles driving at road speeds.

Whole process can take up to an hour depending on discs/pads. Sould see a white tinge to pad edges if done properly.

Its quite interesting feeling the pads come in at different times, car will pull around all over the place. Once complete should stop nice and straight :)

 

probably a bit overkill for a road going 205 :)

never been a big fan of mintex 1144, but swapping from them to ds3000 was like night and day, as as a result i wont use the mintex pads again.

Really?! What didn't you like about them?

 

Must admit I mainly use m1155s but I really like them, plus they're generally half the price of ds's!

I cannot change calipers as the rules state the car must remain as it left the factory, that is what is good about it! We will soon see if the old 205 design can still cut the mustard!!!! I normally sprint much faster cars ( have an R1 bike engine car and a Swiftune mini cooper S, both of which I happily run 1144s in ) but I fancied doing a season in the showroom class as there is more competition to race against. Last time out 6 of us were split by less than 1 second after 90 seconds, its a good adrenalin rush when it is that close. And it's not about how much money you spend to win, cannot be dealing with all that.

My bedding in process was thus: Drive gently to the corner shop. Drive gently to the supermarket. Drive a bit quicker to the garage. Drive to the pub. 50 miles done, brakes feel amazing, job done!

Once you wear out the Mintex call me and get a set of CL brakes pads. Much better for racing :-)

stay clear of rc5+ though. Had 2 very poor experiences of these. Rc6 - amazing. Careful with servoed brake setup can easily apply to much pressure when trail raking causing understeer

true! but it does take some getting used to. Pedal is a rock due to material type and can literally just rest foot on it for trail braking. I switched to DS3000 to try something different and although I don't like how different the pedal is for ultimate stopping power (much move travel) they are in reality slightly better for my brake setup as have more modulation through the entry phase of cornering. I'm still undecided either way as the rc6 just stop so freaking good. Have had to replace dust seals twice now though as keep melting. Ds3000 are wearing more evenly as well and appear to be lasting roughly the same time for £70 a set less :)

 

oh and havnt cracked a disc yet with ds3000, cracked 2 sets with rc6.

rbf600 fluid

braided lines

titlon 'waggle me for no change to your bias whatsoever' bias lever

rc6 / ds3000 pads

 

still servoed which is why rc6 are tricky to deal with for trail braking. But such an awesome pad for ultimate stopping power. Everything just melts though.

I've tried DS2500, Mintex 1144 and Pagid RS4-2 with the Bendix caliper. Pagid were awesome, work fine from cold and get better the hotter they get. After 5 seasons of speed events and a fair few road miles one of the pads started to break up. Demon Tweeks had some CL RC6 on ebay at £72 delivered as opposed to double that for the Pagids so trying the RC6's with a brand new set of Tarox discs (£40 on ebay :) ) this season. Anybody got bedding in details for these pads as the instructions that came with the pads was minimal.

dont require bedding due to material type. Can literally just go out and smash them, and have done so many times :)
