Cambelt Worries 306 Gti 6

Recommended Posts

Hi please help. Bought myself an engine off a good mate...

Long story short is he messed up cambelt change and never locked off cams. I've managed to sort it out to my knowledge by locking off cams in there locking position, pretty much common knowledge !. I also locked off crank but dont know whether if it's " coming or going" if you know what a mean, is the crank in wrong position, upside down?.

I asked a friend mechanic who tells me usually piston 1 is TDC ! Closest to cams.if all 3 pins are aligned.

I locked off all 3 put new belt on and turned it by hand 10 times. Can hear the compression. And both cam and crank sensors roughly hit there marks the same time. My worry is that when I line up all three locking points that piston 1 isn't TDC. And when I put piston 1 in TDC the 3 pins don't match there locking holes. Please help.

When the crank is locked all the pistons are in the middle of their stroke

With the crank locked like that youd expect cams tobe lined up at there locking points too, yeh?. Cheers btw.

I'd do a lot of reading before carrying on mate.

Bottom pulleys are known to slip round meaning the crank will not lock off where it is supposed to

A now realise why Spoox do a solid bottom pulley. Mine has that rubber bush in it but don't know how it could of slipped because its very solid and has the woodruff key in crank. Everything seems right but don't want to turn it by key.

Really frustrated.

Does both cam and crank sensors have to be in sync or near as dammit to there degree allowance?

Ive learnt that the cam does a full 360 turn to a half 180 turn with the crank and this is whats bothering me, am i on the wrong side of the crank. So basically are the valves opening in the wrong sequence, because this would still allow the engine to turn without hitting valves.

A could even have it correct as we speak. Cheers guys.

Ignore your friend I'm afraid, Advice given to help normally causes a whole load of problems, But with these engine's it should be very common knowledge as said the bottom pulleys slip as it does on a load of XU engine's.

The pistons should be MDC and the cam's locked but either the centre bolt or the 3 bolts loose so you can move the cams to get the timing spot on, Any remains of paint for marking should ring alarm bells too.

I would do a compression and leak down test before going too far as it doesn't take much to bend those valves

Remove the spark plugs from cylinders 1 & 2 (flywheel end) and with a long piece of wire check that the pistons are at the same distance down the bores.

That's the point that the crank pulley should be able to be pinned (as well as the cam pulleys). As Miles said, the belt change is done at this piston position-90 degrees BTDC.

Chances are you've got it right, as Jeff says do a bit of a check to see if the pistons are all at the same height when the crank pulley is pinned. An 8valve crank pulley can be fitted to check it too.

Allen, when an 8v pulley is used, which hole of the 3 available should be used?

The same hole as for the 8v engine which is the only one that is 10mm.

A few VERY important details to remember about any pug XU engine.

Number 1 is flywheel end.

Pistons sit MDC as mentioned.

One quick check you can do if you aren't 100% of the crank pulley's damper, is to crack off the crank bolt, pin the cams, whip the bolt out, and check the orientation of the woodruff slot.

the timing pin hole should be 70 degrees forwards of the woodruff slot, which is parallel to the bottom and top faces of the cylinder block.

Cheers guys. All pistons sat MDC when cams and crank pinned. Whilst on the subject. imagine im turning engine over by hand, clockwise, with the crank bolt. Does that pin on the tensioner have to sit roughy in the middle to keep a good tension. I know it moves back and forth but where should it sit whilst being turned over. Just so i can re adjust incase its wrong. Thanks again.

Nes, it might be worth reading the thread "timing belt help", where lots of people helped me out.

Once everything is tensioned the pointer shouldn't move when rotating the engine, and it should point to the little notch.

The pointer will move, as long as you set it when pinned but the sprocket hubs loose that's all that matters.
