forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted March 4, 2014 Hey there everyone, I've been hunting around for a new GTi project and stumbled on a pretty ratty 1.6 that has my interest, the problem is that the windscreen apparently has a big crack in it, I'm thinking by the sound of it, it can't be repaired so, how much am I roughly looking to get the screen replaced? Can the screen still be supplied or should I be hunting down one locally to get fitted by a specialist? Any help is gratefully received.
AlexRS2782 136 1 Cars Posted March 4, 2014 I had mine done last year via a local independent company that dealt with classics & they supplied / fitted a Pilkington screen to oe spec with bronze / top tint for circa £120 inc VAT. I also got a quote from National Windscreens who would supply & fit the same Pilkington screen for £130 inc VAT. Both prices were based on carefully removing the original seal & reusing as new sunroof ones weren't available at the time, but non sunroof ones were - whether that's still current I don't know. Avoid Autoglass at all costs as they'll want upwards of £350 for the same level of work. Might be cheaper to claim on insurance, but if the excess is £75-£100 (like most) then for another £30 you may as well just pay it yourself & avoid getting your premium hiked by a similar amount the following year due to a "claim" and the amount of £££ that Autoglass will have invoiced for the work involved.
Slo 283 1 Cars Posted March 5, 2014 just took one out myself of a scrapper took about half hour and had the sunroof rubber luckily. If you can find one in a scrapyard that isnt broken just cut it out of the rubber it isnt bonded in then just kick your broken one out from the inside simples

forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted March 5, 2014 I've decided to pay National to replace it, only £101 for a brand new one fitted.
