Front Springs On 205 Stdt (Diesel Gti!)

Recommended Posts

vee-tail

Hi please help a non racing 205 owner.

My 205 STDT turbo diesel had a collapsed drivers side front McPherson strut. It was replaced with a 205 GTI strut which in my ignorance seemed the same. The STDT has same body and suspension as a GTI but the engine is heavier, so the springs are different. Now my STDT sits lop sided as the GTI spring is not strong enough. :(

Can anyone give me the correct original equipment spring strength details for an STDT front strut.?

There were few 205 STDTs sold in the UK so finding spares is difficult. If I find the correct spec then one of the aftermarket spring suppliers may be able to help.

Many thanks for any info.

I thought the STDT had the same set up as a normal diesel model? Wasn't it a misconception that they had the same setup as the GTI.... Or was that the Gentry...

Surely a normal diesel spring would do it though considering the ride height is very close to the standard cars, at least at the front anyway.

Fit a pair of springs, poor practice to fit singles.

GTi springs do sit lower on an STDT an inch or so and actually make for a nice budget lowering spring.

It might be worth PM'ing Dirtdog on here as he has a STDT and bought a pair of GTi springs off me to lower it earlier this year and thus might be willing to sell his original STDT springs. I would imagine that all 205 TD springs are broadly the same though.

Hmm if only my garage had not scrapped the collapsed strut, then I could have retrieved the spring.

There are plenty of turbo diesel springs available but they have different colour codes. I am trying to see if there is a trace of colour code on the remaining original spring ... but just light rust is seen.

STDT springs could well be the same as the n/a diesel springs, unfortunately service box doesn't differentiate between the n/a & turbo diesel models.

I do remember they were very long uncompressed compared to the GTI springs when i swapped them on my old STDT.

You could try cleaning the other side spring for a colour code& see which it matches on the service box list below, if any.

205N 5 50A 80A

FRONT SPRING FRONT TORSION BAR

DIESEL

01

5002 38 NFP 02 FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING 2 YELLOW 1 RED OR 2 YELLOW 1 WHITE

5002 33 02 1 POS 1 WHITE 1 YELLOW OR 1 WHITE 1 GREEN

5002 41 NFP 02 1 RED OR 1 WHITE

5002 35 02 2 GREEN 1 RED OR 2 GREEN 1 YELLOW

5002 RS 02 1 BLUE 1 WHITE OR 1 BLUE 1 YELLOW

5002 34 NFP 02 2 WHITE 1 RED OR 2 WHITE 1 GREEN

5002 A8 NFP 02 2 GREEN 1 RED OR 4 GREY

As noted, some are NFP so no longer available from Peugeot.

worth trying some electrolysis on them, I couldn't see any markings on my original gti springs but I found two yellow stripes after a day in the fluid!

Many thanks for replies. Will do some serious cleaning of the other side spring to look for colours. Will give Dirtdog a p/m ... perhaps his STDT springs still have their colour markings.

Found the marks on the pax side original spring. One red and one white.

that's an odd one, its not a combination listed on servicebox!

there's "two white, one red" which is 5002 34, unfortunately NFP, also used on TU engined 306's and early 405's.

This may be a dumb question ... The pax side spring and drivers side spring presumably are wound as opposites ... looking from the top, one would be clockwise the other anti-clockwise. Would the markings show which was which?

E.G.One white mark = pax side Two white marks = drivers side? Like I say, probably a dumb question ..

Guess that WAS a dumb question.

Have found a spring supplier on the web who lists both the colour marks and the spring sizes. They don't stock one white and one red ... nearest is two whites and one red.

I will measure up the spring diameter and wire size on the original spring to find the nearest match.

Thanks again for help. :)

So would all GTIs have two yellow stripes or were different springs fitted to GTIs throughout the years?

Depends on equipment, but a 1.9 non ac non pas car i.m.e is two yellow marks.

Not seen any others to start a list, unfortunately servicebox doesnt differentiate any further than; carb - tu24 - diesel - injection.

Might be worth trying to start a list. I'll be taking my 1.6 ones off in a couple of weeks to do the top mounts so I'll have a look then.

Then again there's no guarantee that they're the original ones fitted.

Just done some serious cleaning on the original pax STDT spring and found another white mark! So it's a two whites and one red spring, which is listed on Carfactors UK website at £29.90 (Suplex 24022). Out of interest I cleaned up the GTI spring that needs changing, and it has two yellow marks.

Thanks to everyone for your help ... I sure learned a lot about springs.

Your right veetail. My STDT springs have 2 white and 1 red stripe. I've still got both of them , also got two gti struts (not sure if the struts are the same as the diesel ones)
