Goodwood Mi16 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

flyfisher

Thinking about replacing the 1.9 be3 gearbox in my mi16 309 goodwood. I have been offered a box from a xsara vts.

What I'm asking is this a worthwhile swop are ratios. Better than the rather long ratios in my presant g/ box. Also is this a straight swop. Thanks peter

Ratios are well suited to the engine - quite similar to the original 1.9 Mi16 gearbox in fact.

Not a straight swap though - you'll need to swap the selector arm, clutch fork, clutch arm, possibly reverse light (depending on age), speedo drive and the differential (unless you make a hybrid NS driveshaft using the Xsara inner CV)

I replaced my 1.6 BE3 gearbox on my Mi16 with the Xsara VTS box and it is the best thing I have done in my opinion. The ratios really suit the engine and any long drives at 70mph are a lot less noisy!

1.6 box is perfect imho.

Why would you want to stifle it with a long box?

the mi or xsara box is far from long.

I am using a 306 s16 box on mine which is basically the same as a xsara vts, works well, ratios seem ideally suited. As above you have to modify or swap one of the selector arms and swap the diff for the 205 one. Although i am using the 306 pull clutch and arm with a slightly modified be1 clutch cable.

its not about top end, its about the cruising RPM.

And why would you ever want to do that?

You buy a diesel for that...

no you don't, some people want to enjoy driving these cars and can't afford, nor want to be throwing fuel through it all the time, where dropping the fifth gear rpm by nearly 300 will have a decent effect on economy.

Yes I understand all the fors and against. Just want something that will drop in without any messing with diffs and cv joints. Which is short 1st and second gear but longer in 4th. And 5th. Does any thing exist like this

Closest thing to that requirement is a BX/405 1.9 Mi16 gearbox - selector arm needs changing and ideally the speedo drive but I think that's it. Diff is compatible with 205 shafts and the clutch arm is already the correct BE3 setup.
