Guest Nathanlgd Posted November 19, 2003 Hiya mate, I'm a sign writer, I fit vinyl every day and do a fair few sunstrips. First of all you could do with a squirty bottle and a sign writers squegee/aplicator. When its comes to fitting, the first most important thing is to simply clean the hell out of the top of the screen - make sure you get well into the rubber edges. For cleaning just use abit of water or slightly soapy water. Make sure its well clean and totaly dry, especialy around the rubber edges. The rubber edges tend to hold on to some of the water and release it when desturbed during the fitting process, this makes the edges of your sunstrip too wet and dirty to stick so. Once the top of the screen is nice and shiny and all dry around the edges, give the top of the screen a "light" spraying with either water (which is good enough) or water with a few drops of washing up liquid in it. Get a friend to help you line the sunstrip up on yor screen. To get it straight simply make your sunstrip is butt up to the rubber at each corner of the screen. Once your happy that its lined up, cover your applicator with a soft rag and begin squeezing out the water/air from the sunstrip. Start in the middle and run from top to bottom. Once the strip is well boned down (he...hehe... he said "boned") and pushed against the screen rubbers (to give an accurate "cut here" line) take a sharp blade (craft knife, scalple, stanley knife blade) and trim off the excess. Wa'la! bobs ya daddeh! Easier said then done but I hope this helps. If you cant find an applicator you might be able to just rub the strip on using a rag - this may trap air though. danGTI 0 Posted November 20, 2003 (edited) just thought i'd emphasize how inportant it is to make sure the screen is perfectly clean, any debris, even a small bit of grit, will make itself very obvious once the strip has dried. It might even be worth usung brake disc cleanerto get rid of any stuborn dirt or oils. I went through 3 on my first car in learning how to do it properly! I took the first off cos it was too small but when i put the next on i hadn't removed a small area of remaining glue and when i put the new one on it left a huge embossed patch not disimilar to a map of africa lol. It wasn't really visable before but it sure was after. Btw if your worried about making mistakes don't be scared to soak the windscreen, it'll help you move the strip around and save you having to buy another when it sticks to itself. danGTI 0 Posted November 20, 2003 oh, and remember the wipers must not go over it by more than 10mm otherwise you risk failing your m.o.t. Of course you can always remove it at that time or fit sligtly smaller wiper blades. Generally though, the plod wont mind how low down it is as long as you don't go o.t.t and cover most of the screen!
symonpll 0 Posted November 20, 2003 (edited) still worried that i f**k it up, any idea of a place i can take it to get i done? Edited November 21, 2003 by atomic-jon
Guest rodneyp Posted November 20, 2003 i fitted mine first time fine, just make sure everythings soaked! and take time so it doesnt slip. how will a sunstrip fail an MOT? if the wipers touch more then 10mm of it? i thought it wasnt allowed to cover more then 25% of the windscreen? ill be a bit pissed off if my only MOT failure is my sodding sunstrip! Gary 2 Posted November 21, 2003 It all depands on the garage, ive had a strip on every car i've owned and it's always passed the mot with them,it's mainly the old bill that dont like them and it's them that give you the story about not having full view of the road. If your worried about messing it up,then just buy another one and have a practice go.

Nothing is allowed to obstruct the swept area of the screen, so by fitting smaller wiper blades or arms you can get it through.
