Aux Belt - Problem

Recommended Posts

dobboy

Yesterday I went about fitting the alternator belt.

While screwing in the little 8mm male/female stud that allows fittment of an eccentric tensioner wheel to the big engine mount/bracket, the stud snapped.

There is about 6mm of thread poking out.

I've tried mole grip etc, but its not budging.

Worse case I could cut it flush, drill through it, and try take it out with an "easy out".

I've heard people talking about "stretch belts", can anyone shed some light on them or point me to where I can see the sizes available, or a manufacturer, to see if I can find something suitable?

TIA

Irwin nutgrips :)

And a tap next time you wind a bolt into an old thread.

Surely you could feel it was tight??

Yeah, it was tight, it didn't feel as tight when I put the scaffolding pole over the end of Allen key! Lol

Lesson learned.

WP, I'm not sure there will be enough meat left to use the nut grip.

Is a stretch belt not an easier option for me?

Depends if you want a fix or a Bodge

Goodyear make them so surely they must be decent quality.

If its suitably sized, why is it a bodge?

Nothing but squealing on my brothers 405 with a normal goodyear belt, not a fan.

Prefer to do the job properly, and use a dayco or hutchinson belt.

Get on and drill the bolt out, dont bother with an easy out, just go up to 6.5 mm and if you get it central you should be able to pick the remains out and tap it.

Or use a different tensioning method.

WP, yeah I think i'll try drilling it out as the first step as you say. The bolt metal seemed soft so it might be not too bad.

why is it a bodge?

Because you've not fitted the original tensioner because you've sheared the bolt off and can't be arsed to sort it?!

Yeah it's an option.... But i doubt theres enough meat left to do that either.

I think I may also have one of they bigger type tensioners that are on the plates, that came with another engine I have, maybe be able to do something with that to if it comes to it.

I'm just wondering if the stud thing had actually bottomed, and that caused it to sheer.

I think cutting flush, drilling/tapping is probably best option. If there is sufficient length sticking out I might even be able to get a good bite at it on a vice and spin the bracket, at least to get it started.

Have you read any of the advice?

To summarise the answers to your question for you; remove bolt (as you suggested yourself in your first post, which coincidentally i read) and fit the tenisioner. Don't use a stretch belt.

It sounds as if the only tools around here are the ones you need taking off you.

Dobboy, seriously it's not a problem just drill it out, tap it and problem solved! If not i will come over n do it, as for stretchy belts, there only for fat boys!!!

Thanks Malc, i've ordered a set of 8mm taps and a set of easy outs, the easy outs i have at present are too big.

If it can be done by drilling/EZ out or tapping i should manage.

Fixed.

Drilled it, picked out the remains, re-tapped it, loaded it up with thread lock, and all is well.

Thanks all!

You're funny!

ps i was gonna use the elastic from your wife's knickers, but the bmx wheel that I would've needed to take up the tension wasn't very practical!

I am funny yes, I'm even funnier due to the fact my jokes are car/topic related where as your lack of wit means you have to stoop to using personal insults.

Oh and for your information I'm not married! That isn't an invitation to make a pass at me mind ;)
