Weird Noises Coming From The Gearbox [ Be ]

Recommended Posts

Sicnce there's lots of people around here with serious experience in the XU10 world i just wanted to post on a little thing that has been bugging me for a long time:

I own a self converted 205 cj, wich over the years had a complete heart transplant and lots more...

Let me take you guys trough the basics:

XU10J4R S16 engine and box (the cast iron thing, complete with the gearbox) taken out of a citroen ZX, the engine head has been completely rebiuld due to a belt mishap...

Its running the pull type clutch, wich works perfectly fine... however when things get warm after a few km's (or miles for that matter) the thing devellops a weird whining noise wich has become worse over the years...

I've been working on peugeots for quite some time now but never heard a sound quite like it. The clutch has been replaced for a full new set (valeo stuff) as are the release arm bushes (the plastic thingies in the bell housing.

I suspect there's something gone wrong on one of the bearings on the primary axle (not sure if thats a straight and perfect translation there) of the box, causing it to be fine when cold but going wrong after the housing has warmed up and expanded just a bit...

Does this sound familiar? Has anyone heard of this before?

description of the sound: Whining (i'm sure i misspelled that) and rev-dependend... and i have to add, when the engine is turned of it does not immediately stop! Clutch possition does infuence the pitch of the sound, but is not always a way to take it away completely.

Can somebody post a exploded view of a BE3/5 box?

The sound can be heard at the end of this power-run on the rolling road made+- 2 years ago.

Is it likely fot either one of the bearings on the end of the pictured shaft to go bad an cause whining noises?

0:32 to 0:36? like a screaming sound? or 0:56 onwards or both?

0:32 to 0:36 sounds like the brake shoes tickling the discs

0:56 onwards sounds like the tyre skidding on the roller seeing as the brakes are on hard at the end there

its the 0;56 onwards sound (as said, the very end of the vid!)

I know for a fact that the 0:32-0:36 is the standard S16 exhaustmanifold heat-shield thats missing a few bolts... (that has been fixed ever since i got it back on the lift after these runs)

The 0:56 onwards sound it NOT the tyres skidding, as it can also be heard with the car running at idle whilst standing still...

Brakes are free of any sounds too, i've so far managed to rule out quite a lot of different things:

- Once a mechanic told me the brake-booster valve gone wrong could cause noises like this (has been replaced for brand new)

- Alternator bushes have been ruled out by taking out the belt

- Cambelt and rollers have been replaced

- Vacuum pump (the one on the intake shaft) has been taken out and blanked of as for a test..

- complete clutch and relaese bearing kit has been replaced for new parts...

And since the sound continues for a few secs after the engine has stopped running i'm suspecting some kind of bearing on the primary shaft in the gearbox...

Is there someone here that recognises this noise?

just uploaded another vid on youtube...

The first minute or so is a lot of tire skidding on the coated parking floor, but the weird (i suspect bearing) noises can be heard as well... getting worse!

oh, and the fuel pump that can be heard a few times has been replaced since i started noticing it making noises!!
