205Gti-Friendly Garages In South Wales To Set Up My Engine Idle Etc?

Recommended Posts

ATK

Anyone know of any garages in South Wales who are good with 205gti's and can properly setup my engine?

Would like to get my idle down as even with the screw all the way in it's at 1200rpm.

Think it just needs a good setup - I have the Haynes manual but would rather pay someone to get it right for me.

Cheers!

Does he do setups then if asked nicely? More than willing to pay to have it done!

CP Auto's in Llantwit Major

Not a specialist and doesn't do setup stuff, but is a bloody good mechanic, would recommend for anything else if your stuck for options

Cheers

John

EDIT - he doesn't have an emissions tester - but has said he knows people with the right stuff to do carb setups etc etc. always worth a call/drop by just to clarify stuff.

Cheers John but I've got a good mechanic but needed someone with gti specific knowledge to adjust throttle stop, idle screw, afm etc to sort my cold start issue

Had a good read through the Haynes, but it's the ignition advance (rotating the dizzy) and TSP thats making me not confident of having a go myself!

Only other mention of specialists I could find were a Bouji Citroen in Newport but I don't think they exist anymore?

sure you could just buy a light gun and if you read up on it could be done yourself

Still reluctant in case I cock it up, to be honest. Particularly the ignition advance and throttle stop position. I know it's not difficult but when it comes to the running of the engine I'd prefer to spend a couple of quid and pay someone who knows what they are doing :)

regarding the ignition timing, you can't really go off the timing marks these days, modern fuels plus wear and tear in components can make for quite a difference, whether you run it on standard 95 or SUL also (these cars were made for 4 star which IIRC was 97)

you can get it very accurate by ear, on the road if you find a decent incline, take an 11mm spanner with you and wind it till it pinks, then back off a bit, there is a certain method to get an idle setting but I don't recall what it was specifically, but I'm sure Damir posted it maybe a few years back.

a rolling road would be ideal though.
