Oil Cooler Return Pipe

Just looking for confirmation, fitting an oil cooler to my GTI6 engine, I need to fit the cooler vertically, therefore I'm guessing I need the return pipe on the top just incase of air trapped in the cooler. On the block is the center hole to the oil filter the feed and the hole on the left (nearest the alternator) the return. I presume this is correct but just want to be 100%
