Carb Advice Needed.

Firstly, although I've been a lurker for ages, I think this is my first post apart from the introduction one so, hello! I can normally find an answer to my usually very simple questions by reading, but I need some advice this time.

 

The car is a 205 Roland Garros cabriolet, 1991, I hope this is in the right section, I think it's the TU engine! It died on me a few days ago and the garage who recovered it for me say it needs a new carburetor. It will start but it won't idle, does that sound like a dead carb? They described it as 'being confused'?!?! I'm always a bit sceptical about mechanics who aren't used to working on older cars, but they say they are sure that is what is required and have pointed me towards Peugeot for a new part. I can't afford a new one from Peugeot, so I was wondering where the next best place to get one was and how to make sure I'm not just buying another broken one. I don't suppose one off a car that has sat for 7 years is likely to be any good?

 

Thank you for your patience, I really enjoy working on my car where I can, but as an enthusiastic amateur carbs are way over my head and I don't have anyone local I can trust!

PS. Can carbs be reconditioned? If so, who would do this?

I'm not too clued up on carbs, dirty things, but I am sure you can get them 'rebuilt' easy enough.

 

Might be worth doing a generic internet search for info on how they work, what type of carb it is, how to service it and possibly checking the fuel system to ensure no leaks. I am sure these are mechanical pumps so could be a leak along the line.

She doesn't know the first thing about carbs and you suggest putting a 106 in!? Thanks davie!

 

Firstly it's highly unlikely it needs to be replaced, floats might be saturated or needle jets blocks but it won't be trash. It's a carb after all, they have personalities!

 

About 4 years ago I bought a complete rebuild kit from peugeot for the solex z2 for £48. There is a company in Manchester I think that produces rebuild kits for then also, a good friend purchased the kit not long ago so I wil direct him here and he should be able to pass on the details.

 

Actually rebuilding it is quite easy if you do it methodically. Afterwards you'll want some one with a good ear to set the fuel mixture and idle.

Ps, as WP says it's the same engine as a xs with a solex z2, mechanical lift pump.

When I bought a kit to rebuild the carbs on my XS I got it from Gower & Lee, I read up on it on the forum and they were recommended by a few members:

It wasn't on their website but give them a ring and they're super helpful. Just give them the name of the car & the carburettor you've got. If I recall they charged me about £40-50 for a Solex rebuild kit.

Like Al said, if you've got a free weekend I'd give it a go yourself. It's not too difficult really, disassemble methodically, I would also clean each part with a carb cleaner spray or light degreaser, rinse and dry carefully (you don't want to leave water or degreaser in the carb) and replace the consumable parts with the parts from the kit - needles, gaskets and perhaps floats. I believe Gower & Lee might even be able to provide you with a step by step guide. If you give them precise information about what happened to yours they'll tell you if they recommend replacing anything beyond their basic kit. Otherwise just use your cameraphone and take a picture each time you remove something (laborious I know) and you'll end up with a good photographic guide of your own so you know where each bit goes.

 

The carb will then need to be set up again properly which a garage should be able to do for you. Personally I would be looking around for a different garage if their advice was just to direct you to Peugeot to buy a brand new carburettor for a 23 year old car!

 

Alternatively there are companies which offer a carburettor exchange service. I'm afraid I've never used one so don't have any recommendations but perhaps other members do/try a forum search to see if anyone has used one before?

Wonderful replies that I just about managed to understand, thank you guys! It is a bit nerve-racking posting in here when you're a novice. I'm going to contact Gower and Lee and see what they advise.

Check where the carb fits aswell you could have an air leak in between there where it fixes down. I cleaned mine up when i rebuilt my engine, they are surprisingly easy to do.

Haynes do have a manual which shows you how to dismantle it. I cant remember what one it is, ill have a nosey when i get home from work and let you know. I found it really helpful and informative.

 

turns out your not to far from me either so i could come by and have a nosey for you. But in no mechanic so could only help through past experience that i have had.

i had a similar problem on my xs turned out the bolt the holds the throttle linkage on had come loose causing it to not idle just had to line all the linkage back up and tighten the bolt up with a little lock tight on the thread but not too tight as it wont move freely. just might be something worth checking

I just thought I'd post a little update as you guys were all so helpful :-)

 

I bought a rebuild kit from Gower and Lee and had the car transported to a friend of mine who did the necessary. Apparently a diaphragm was split causing lots of fuel to flood in. The carb has now been stripped, cleaned and rebuilt and although there is still a little fuel dribbling in when you turn the engine off, it is now running ok. I picked her up today having not driven her for 8 weeks, it's great to have her home! I've been driving a horse box instead so it felt especially good to be driving a 205 again, I drove like a hooligan all the way back :-D (Naughty!). For me 205s are just the most fun you can have on 4 wheels!

 

So, thanks for all the help and advice. Now all I need to do is fix the door seals, find all 6,593 leaks and somehow plug them, solve the overheating problem, make the windows go up and down, buy a wheel bearing and do something about all the paint peeling off everywhere and we'll be good to go. Did I mention the fun?!? :-D
