Phase 2 Clarion Pu-9318A Wiring Help

Recommended Posts

lightflow

I've got hold of an original Clarion PU-9318A Tape Cassette and am refurbishing it. I'm going down to the detail of polishing out scratches on the face plate and re-spraying it's buttons etc...

I've managed to crack the code and I have all the power wiring sorted.

My 205 has wiring for a modern Sony headunit which I'm removing, but I'm going to use the iso connectors that are now in the loom.

However, I'm struggling with the speaker wiring from the tape cassette. As I received it the speaker wires are wired into the choc box shown. There are six speaker wires. Somehow they should feed four speakers:

Green with White Stripe

Red with White Stripe

White

Grey with Green Stripe

Grey with Red Stripe

Grey

Both the "White with Red Stripe" and "Grey with Red Stripe" loop out to another connector - I am guessing they form a shared or common earth/return. Effectively providing four positives, and four earths.

Can anybody help with identifying the wiring colours and confirm my thinking about the common earths? I could randomly guess and wire things up at random, but didn't want to blow anything..

I have already called my local dealer and Clarion UK for information. Both have said it is too old to get information on. Clarion said "they would have to go to Japan for microfiches - and they wouldn't do that...."

Thanks for anything you can offer!

There are eight speaker wires (four pairs for front LHS/rear LHS/front

RHS/rear RHS)

(1) grey with red stripe - speaker rear right (+)

(2) grey with green stripe - speaker rear right (-)

(3) grey without stripe - speaker front right(+)

(4) grey with black stripe - speaker front right(-)

(5) white without stripe - speaker front left (+)

(6) white with black stripe - speaker front left (-)

(7) white with red stripe - speaker rear left (+)

(8) white with green stripe - speaker rear left (-)

Lifted from Pug 405 forum - any good?

Dave

Thanks for trying Dave, but I'm afraid that's no help really...

As I said - I only have 6 wires, not 8 - and none of those colours match.

I'll experiment a bit - shouldn't blow anything as a speaker wired with reverse polarity should be fine - I was just trying to get a setup without guessing.

Hi Matt - that helps a little - different model but same wires!

You wiring is going into a standard connector - which is on the car loom - I don't have that because it's been removed to fit a modern iso connnector.

However - it does look there are some loops being made to others pins. I think if I find the pins layout for your style of connector I will have the answer :)

Hi Matt,

that was for the 9318A - or so it said. I can see a few that match ? The looping is to put pairs of speakers in parallel, or series as the radio/player may only have two independent o/p channels (i.e. stereo as opposed to quad). Reverse polarity just puts the speakers concerned out of phase, good luck with it though.

Well it looks to me like all the wire colours match. Here's what I get from all this so far....

Dave, yes it makes more sense that it is a stereo setup, and not quad of course. In fact there is no front to back fader on the tape cassette player so it will be stereo. the wiring is then duplicating the left and right speakers in parallel.

The loop is to split the positive for the left and right channels.

Matt's photo gives another clue. The power wires are all in the middle of the block. I think the left and right channels are separated at either end of the block.

Exact wiring for phase might take a bit of playing around but this gives me more to work with.

Matt, I think a shot of the loom and its wiring colours and which way the red plug orients into that would make everything come together!

Cheer chaps.

What models was the PU-9318A used on? I thought for a PH2 the correct unit would be PU-9469A or am I wrong?

Yes Alex, I wasn't sure. Visually they look the same I think, although I haven't physically compared two side by side. The stereo came from the previous owner of my 205. It certainly is from the right era. I'm wondering if the 9318a was supplied in 309 GTis?

Super pleased - I've managed to fit the stereo - now fully refurbished. The interior of my '93 Phase 2 is now back to fully original spec.

Deep cleaned everything on the facia, resprayed the buttons to match orginal colour (or as near as damn it - Tamiya Acrylic Metallic TS-42). Then I wired the stereo wires into an ISO block, so that it can always be reverted to a modern headunit again if necessary.

I also removed some good quality but nasty looking after market Alpine tweeters and fitted new speaker covers. It all looks in mint condition now and looks and sounds as it should from '93, which is to say not quite 2014. But it's not really about sound quality it's about originality.

Photos and the conclusion of my wiring to follow...
