Possible Purchase Of 205 Gti 1.9

Recommended Posts

leejordan

Hi,

I have seen a 205 gti 1.9 with 108000 miles on the clock,

Hardly any service history

And the engine fires but does not start up

He thinks it could be possible the valve or ignition timing is out.

If this is true would it be a big job

Do you think it is worth taking the risk?

Thanks

Lee

Not for a non runner mate, £300 tops for something you can't drive. Your taking on the risk and risk is worth money.

Depending on the condition of the car, £990 could be a fair price.

If it is not running pin up the timing holes to make sure it has not slipped.

Personally I would be looking at buying it in mind that it could need an engine refresh. So make sure the bodywork is very clean as well as rust free.

That's the white 1.9 on fleebay isn't it? Looks like it's been messed about with a fair bit.

If I'm correct it's got the wrong seats for a phase 1? The red bumper trims look like they have been replaced with chrome ones . Various parts your going to fork out for if your wanting to make it a good example especially when there's others out there you could buy running/taxed and motd. Really depends what your looking for. Personally if I was going to buy it I'd weight up if it wasn't worth spending money on would I get my money back on the parts it does have by breaking it. From what I can see of it it's far from a good original example. However that's just my opinion :)

I agree with Dan, if there are engine issues thats not too much of a problem, good 8 valve engines can be had for around £100 with a little searching or obviously more if you want a recon. The key thing when I buy 205's is to have really tidy bodywork/shell. All the other parts, suspension, brakes, engine etc... can be restored upgraded over time. 1900's do fetch a premium over 1600's but if you are lucky you can still find an honest roadgoing running 1900 for a grand, just......

I've also spotted that on ebay, has been listed for a while and just down the road from me. I would say there is better 205s out there for similar money.

£850 a risk worth taking?

I presume parts are fairly cheap if it does need work doing?

It's worth a punt at £500 IMO depending on your recovery/collection costs and I've got a good engine for it if you did buy it ;) lol

It looks a money pit to me if your wanting to make it original example.

Thanks

Even if I did purchase it for 850 as a non runner it should not cost that much as parts are pretty cheap?

But it needs to be tidy paint wise with not too much rust, panel work and paint can start to add up. But its your call, they are starting to go up in value..... the last 1900 I bought cost me £650, with loads of spares and it wasn't too bad a car...

If it was me I would probaly save a little more and maybe spend £1500 and get something thats ready to go with not too many hidden nasty's.

Parts are not cheap at all so be prepared to spend allot, If it was a simple fix the Garage would have done it one would think as they could ask more money for it

I just looked at that car on ebay. Looks like an absolute shed.

In terms of part and their prices. Even before you start on what is lurking under the surface on that thing you have the red inserts (which as pointed out have been replaced with chrome). They are not cheap, are like hens teeth used and will cost a couple of hundred quid to replace all with new.

I bought a much cleaner (going by the pics and the fact my car was running with tax and MOT) for around the same price last year. I've since spent nearly double on replacing/fixing and I'm doing all the work myself. I don't think you can go into 205 ownership thinking it's going to be cheap nowadays, especially if you want something original and clean.

I bought mine in 2009 for £750, long MOT, short tax, running but needed a clutch and exhaust, partial recon of the engine by the owner and rebuilt rear beam, some surface rust - it was probably a tad expensive at the time but I needed a car and I could have done worse! I got away with spending very little on it for the first few years, partly because I had a fair few parts from my last GTi's, but this last year has cost 2-3K as almost everything has started to go...

New engine mounts, for example, may seem cheap(ish) but add up a few parts like this and it starts to hurt! If I was buying a new one I'd look to get one that had a fair amount of work done to it recently - rear beam recon is a must!

Thankyou for reply's and great info,

At first when looking I was looking for low millage but as you said if I find one with good service history and a good amout of work done to it then the high millage is not a bad thing

I totally agree, i looked at loads when i got mine last year. Most were sheds. Eventually spend £1500 on a very original car in good condition. By no means a shed. So far spent about £400 on various parts and still about £1000 to spend by the time i get rear beam and seats sorted. So its definitely not a car that is cheap to put right. Parts are getting hard to find and expensive so i would think twice if you think it will be cheap if you want one in good condition.

Good luck though. I love mine.
