Litium Ion Starter Batteries

Recommended Posts

B1ack_Mi16

I'm looking into maybe getting a lightweight starter battery for my 205 soon now, as I was thinking to use the Optima Red Top in the 405 T16 now when it's getting closer to assembly :)

Anyone knows of any webshops selling litium starting batteries with enough capacity to get my 2.3 litre XU cranked up? :)

Alex Crosse used a lithium battery I believe. Not sure what spec or where he got it from.

You could message him and enquire?

They do seem the way forward - think he said 1.5kg or something.

My optima 25 is way more than that.

Quite expensive, but I've seen on S2000 forums about them, something similar to this:

http://shoraipower.com/lfx36l3-bs12-p130

This is the thread in question:

http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/873972-5-lb-lifepo4-battery-for-s2000/

It looks fascinating, but looks to be around the £300 mark for around 10kg saving. But I'm sure with further searching you could find something cheaper.

Could be useful though, especially given its relatively high standard location.

how do you plan to charge it? remember life and lithium are different. Check the "c" rating is high enough also.

They charge as normal off an alternator.

This one I'm looking at is 4.5kg. I do need some cranking capacity. anyway the optima red top is 17kg so quite some saving anyway!

Ever tried to put one of these out when it's on fire?

You can't charge a lithium battery of a normal charging circuit, they need balancing. I wouldn't personally run one in a car I've seen many lipo fires and puffing in my time.

Oh really..? Well god knows what I was doing the whole time I was running my car.

First of all... lithium ion and lithium polymer are two completely different things.

These are lithium ION batteries. They are set up internally so you can charge them as normal. They are also what the plenty of motorbikes use.

And have you ever tried to put a tank of petrol out?

And as for cranking capacity, someone was using the same battery as me on a high compression evo engine and it was fine. Don't over spec something for no reason and substitute what you're trying to save in the first place.

How many amps are you thinking you need?

The cheapo rally designs battery is quite capable of churning a hi-compression engine over, they're about £60 and weigh just over 5.5kg from memory.

They're a normal sealed type battery not lithium mind.

How much and where was your battery from Alex?

Ok. Well reason for thinking I would like some extra amps is that my engine ain't the easiest to start (I might possibly be able to fix this by changing the map). But in reality I have no clue about how many amps I need.. so you tell me? :)

When below 10 deg C it might need a 3-4 trys to get it to start. Cranking about 10 seconds each time. As it's 2.3 litres and hi-comp it needs some good cranking abilities to make it spin reasonably fast.

Probably a small batteri would still coope, but the 20 Ah is probably at least big enough, it was also more reasonably priced than some of the smaller ones I noticed.

Hum.

Says map rather than battery to me.

Or something is faulty somewhere - temp sensor/wiring - but then at the mapping this should have been picked up.

My PC680 turns my engine over easy, as well as many other high comp engine I now of.

Sure mapping is not perfect, I've done a bit of it myself too, but find it hard for cold starts. Not sure if it is worse to make a big overlap engine cold start compared to a more normally cammed one?

I'm running 3.8mm lift @TDC for inlet and 3.25mm lift at TDC for exhaust.

If I remember correctly my old standard Mi16 lump in the 405 did not show the same startup problems when I ran that one on Emerald without any idle valve etc.

But only reason I like a lighter battery is that I'll use the Red Top one in the 405 T16 anyway, so need a new one, so though I could rather buy a lightweight one.

Hi Guys n girls,

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 205 1.9 Gti rallycar.. I want to fit a racing type battery ( to save weight ).... So I'm considering fitting a POWERVAMP PC680 which has following spec:

Amp 18Ah
Dimensions 185 x 79 x 170 mm
CCA 265A
Peak 680A
Weight 7.0kg
I'm satisfied that this battery has enough 'zap' / CCA to crank over the engine... BUT ...will it be sufficient to run the car with all ancillaries operating, ie Wipers, Spotlamp pod ( x 4 spots), blower motor, headlights etc on a wet cold rally stage at night OR will such use kill the battery ???
Jimmi
What is the spec of a normal battery for this car ?

According to my mate whohas run this battery long term - it will struggle on cold mornings with everything running. So I would be hesitant on your rally car in the cold and dark as it'll rely on the alternator.
