So What Is A Rough 205 Worth In Bits?

Recommended Posts

Following on from the 'values' threads.. Hypothetically, what sort of return have people seen on breaking standard 205 GTI's? Lets say youve got one with a tired body, rough paint etc..

Whatever someone will pay for the parts, if theyre any good!

I've been helping to fix up a £400 gti, its all there and decent mechanically, recemt beam, engine from a lower mileage 309, but it has needed rear footwells, front panels and inner wings, sill patches, boot floor at each side.

Well this is the question Mei..

Assuming average/good condition parts, just what kind of return are people getting on a breaker? Just trying to understand the mentality of the break/repair/sell argument.

High spec cars are obviously worth more in bits, so when the time comes your average guy will see a better return on his spend by breaking.

But average, standard, average cars. How do the sell/break return numbers stack up?

You have to factor in the hassle element as well. Breaking a car and dealing with lots of buyers is time consuming when you could have just sold the whole thing and moved on. Selling whole also might see the car resurrected like Welshpug's project.

This, I remember breaking my fire damaged 1.9. It was a nightmare sifting parts. In fact I still have a load of parts which I just boxed up and hung onto. In answer to the original question, the old adage whatever someone is prepared to pay ;)

Also depends on key parts, original gear knobs for example bring decent money.

Selling them on Ebay would get you rich if you put "Rare, Dimma" after everything ;)

I'm not sure if theres lots to be made when you consider, not only the hassle, but the time and cost.

You have to get the car to a suitable place to strip, take the parts off, photograph them, write the description (you have to say VERY RARE it's the law) advertise them, package them, arrange postage, then send them.

Then the cost

ebay fees

paypal fees

fuel (backwards and forwards to post office)

postage fees (ebay doesn't let you make on postage any more)

What about the stuff that doesn't sell, you have to advertise again, whilst still storing it, and don't forget answering all those email that ask whether you will send it to there brother is Usbeckistan, or do you have a BIN price, or how about you sell it to me for a goat and a paper bag or consider a part exchange for an 1984 Skoda

Then when it's all done, your left to get rid of all the stuff that not salable.

I think a lot of parts that end up on ebay are parts that have been taken off as part of a project or upgrade.

Just my 2 peneth worth, but I take my hat off to anyone who does it.
