Valve Stem Oil Seals

Recommended Posts

willis

Hi,

My car has been off the road over the winter but I'll soon get it out once the weather improves. I believe that I require some new valve stem oil seals as it's a bit smokey once warmed up. I read somewhere that you can replace these without removing the head but either way I'd rather get a pro to do it.

Is there anywhere that anybody could recommend in Devon/Cornwall/Somerset and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks

Shame you aren't a bit further east, the garage I use in Surrey did them a treat without removing the head. So sorry can't help in your neck of the woods, but just to say that yes, can be done without head rermoval!

Generally the head would be taken off as you need a valve spring compressor to put the valve springs back in but there are ways around this like pumping compressed air into the cylinder to push the valve up or putting some rope down the spark plug hole and push the piston up (sounds a bit pikey to me!)

Either way depending on how you do it, make sure you use genuine seals. Ive had bad experiences with other makes so will only buy genuine now. I think for my old XU 1.8, it cost me about £35 for all 16 from Pug and if i remember rightly, its the same part for the 6 engine if thats what you have in your car.

Dunsfold Aerodrome mate - where Top Gear is filmed. They are called SGG, and have been Peugeot/Citroen specialists for years and years. They've done loads of work on mine inc the valve stem seals and been great.
