Gti6 Expansion Tank Plumbing

Recommended Posts

Can anyone confirm to me please, if I am correct in the way I intend to fit an expansion tank in to the cooling system of the gti6 engine...

Basically, I am not running a heater, so there are no matrix pipes. I am putting the tank in as shown in the pictures below...

So as you can see, the expansion tank will join, where the rear water pipe from the back of the block and water pump comes up, and meets at the thermostat housing..

Is there any reason that the tank shouldn't be here? I am assuming the water being pushed around from the water pump wont affect the tank...?

So can anyone confirm that by attaching it to the thermostat housing, and the rear water pipe will be ok?

Many thanks!

Looks right to me.

Im also not running a heater. Im not using the BBM hose kit yet mine is plumbed the same.

If you think about it. The water pump pumps water from the side of the block across and through to the top of the block where the thermostat is. When its cold the thermostat ( where the big top hose comes from and plumbs to the Rad ) is shut and the water continues to cycle through the block and back to the pump via the hose your holding in the photo ( the one with the T piece ). Once its gets up to temp ( about 83-5 ) from the water flowing around in a circle more or less the thermostat opens and lets the hot water through to the radiator to be cooled.

Make sense? I could be wrong!!

Thats correct cam.

If you still had the metal pipe you could use the takeoff from that to the expansion tank and blank the second takeoff, preferable to running a silicone pipe under the exhaust manifold imo! (Or as pictured, use the single outlet thermostat housing from an alternative xu engine)

Personally i would preffer to have the heater as it is no more complicated, and hardly much weight for how well they work compared to any aftermarket solution.

Too true.

Ive removed the heater. Ive always wanted a stripped car for the road. Lucky to not have freezing temps like you guys. On the downside, its gets to silly temps in the cabin now!! Ill learn one day..

Engine is coming out soon for a few jobs. One is to fit lots of heat reflector to the bay!

Well im putting a heated screen in the car to solve the screen misting issues. And I cant say ive ever really used the heater for anything like needing to keep warm!

I have a metal pipe going down the back behind the block. I made a new one up. So its not a silicone hose running all the way down the back. The silicone joins at the edge of the head prett much. So doesn't go under the manifold so to speak.

I was also toying with the idea of using the standard pipe and connecting it in that way, but by just leaving the smaller pipe between the thermo housing and the metal pipe, I wasn't sure if it would flow enough? Although im guessing it probably would...

Maybe il look at using the standard thermo housing also, and look at blocking off. Although I did like the neater look of the single take off.
