Whats The Crack With Re Shelling Into An Auto

Recommended Posts

309jazzpanda

So with the A pillar on my gtx getting in a steady decline so I'm lookin around for a 3Dr base model and found a nice auto shell thats cheap but I will be putting on 1360 engine, interior and all suspension etc. Thing is I haven't re shelled before and don't know how it will work swapping from auto to manual in regards to the the v5. Any advice will be nice on the whole job to be honest unless someone has a nice 3Dr base model shell registered as a 1400

Really??

OP,

Just swap the bits to your 'new' car + use that....It's not like you're trying to make a GTi out of it, so I don't see any downsides.

Be prepared for a fair bit of hassle from the DVLA trying to get the engine CC changed given that it affects the tax rate - they don't seem to understand the concept of an individual swapping an engine that they already own into another car, and hence they tend want receipts from you buying the engine and proof from the garage that fitted it

do it one bit at a time

so send of log book with engine swap details and see what happens

How bad is this A pillar? Would it not be worth spending say a day doing a nice repair to it as opposed to a weeks work reshelling the entire car plus all the paperwork headache?

I am with Tom on this one as sometimes the paperwork can be more bother than a welder, some paint and time.

Not the best at bodywork. No thats a lie I cannot do bodywork at all but I have never tried.

Its gone in a few places around the a pillar and top of the windscreen will post pics tomorrow but I Haven't had the screen out yet as I'm too worried it's gone right through rather than just surface, the car has 180k on it now and despite the mechanicals being spot on the body is very ropey biggest issues for me is its my daily and matching the colour, its topaz blue.

Where would I start, is it best to source an A pillar from someone or repair it

Let's see some pictures first. Either cut out locally and weld new in, or if it's really bad weld a complete pillar in, but I've never seen a 205 anywhere near bad enough for that. Minis or Fiestas, however.....

Well I don't think its as bad as some of the ford counterparts. But rust always worries me because it scares me,mechanicals are easy its just nuts and bolts but I can be a bit impatient at times

Just in case whats involved in a pillar change I'm guessing wing off door off windscreen out
