Help With Engine Choice

Recommended Posts

I'm picking up a 205 fitted with a vtr engine on twin 40's and 4 branch, I think the engines a bit tiered and not running great due to a suspect dizzy issue. I will be doing a compression test on the engine when I get it to see if il the current engine is an option.

The other option is the car also comes with a vts engine with 4 branch and chipped ecu, what's the best option? I will be using it for hillclimbs/ auto tests

to be honest I would be looking at this a different way. What class do you want to run in? Do either engines fit into that class in a competitive way. The question gets answered through a simple process of elimination. I cannot see the VTR being great when you could use a 106 rallye engine and have more power and better tuning options. Will the 16v put you in the right class, will you be up against 2.0 engines? Are you even allowed to swap engines from another car?..............

I'd be looking at the class regulations you wish to run in. I have zero experience and knowledge about this kind of think but I've seen some times you have to use a engine block original to the car etc, so you might end up competing against much more powerful stuff??

If it's purely a <1600 class the 1600 16v every time, very tunable too, and the conversion has been covered well on here.

No regulations in what we do, sound I will look into it.

Does the 16v have any issues? As the engine is out and head is off currently I would rather sort them now, will be getting a new water pump and timing belt. Is it worth up rating anything arp bolts ect ?

Surely there are regs or are you going to run sports libre class?

Hillclimb regs require the OE block to be used unless you're running in Sports Libre IIRC. Is the VTR / VTS block the same as fitted to the 205 ?

205 never got a 1600 tu iron block engine, so straight into S-L with your 90 bhp!

Aren't the rules normally worded something like the block needing to be "externally identifiable as standard"?

205's did have iron block 1.4 TU engines - not being too clued up on TU specifics, are those blocks externally the same as the 1.6?

I know people have used/stretched the wording of that rule to justify 1.9 Mi16's in 205's for mod prod.

Never got a 16v tu 205. Scottish hill and sprint championship has regulations. It would be class c0 saloon libre
