Are all racks the same throught the 205s life have read about splines then a square one if not what shape would a phase 1 1.9 require

They changed the lower steering column & rack pinion of the non PAS rack around 1989 from splined to square drive but otherwise the rack is the same fitment & lock to lock through out the life of the 205 afaik.

 

For a phase 1 205 GTI I expect you'll need a the splined version, I know my two 1988 phase 1.5's have splined anyway.

 

The PAS rack has a splined lower column but iirc it is a different size spline & the lower column is shorter so it wouldn't fit the p1 non pas rack.
