Are 205S Actually Selling At The High Prices People Are Asking

Recommended Posts

sickomotorsport

As above, I'm currently searching for a 205 in northern Ireland but any ones I have seen are between 2500 to 4000 and upwards, I'm just wondering who is paying this sort of money for them as most will need some work and are far from mint.

Well, like anything, it's only a matter of time... everyday they become more rare and increase in value, for one in good roadworthy condition I'd expect to pay at least around the £1800 mark with some bargaining... not that expensive in comparison to modern stuff... also being a "high performance model" it will naturally require more maintenance than a family saloon as a general rule.... I wonder how much people would pay these days for a new 205 Gti? what do you reckon? £20,000?

The last 1.9 GTIs sold in 1994 for £12,265 which is about £19k now if you adjust for inflation.

There's a chap on here who paid £7k or similar for one recently. Yes they are selling for silly (is it silly though, times a changin) and that goodwood on eBay at the moment is going very strong.

Agreed a mint low mileage example is worth a pound or two but it seems some of the cars that aren't in the best condition are way over priced. That good wood is sitting near 2k must put my 309 up for 4k seeing as it's got half the miles :)

Mileage is important to a lot of people. I understand it doesn't always mean it's a good or bad car because the mileage is high or low.

Im not from UK but I have seen a rise in prices on the 205 GTI in general the past 2years and Im looking in Germany, France, Italy and Scandinavia. They are becoming slowly more rare and finding a 205 in descent nick isnt as easy as it was 3years ago for some reason. A lot ppl who own these cars are actually getting real inpationed and who always hoped for a rise in price on these rides are now trying to squeeze out some money out them in hope that it will bring up their general value. But as always, SUPPLY-DEMAND that decides that.

The best cars will always sell and will attract strong money. How much depends on what it is worth to the buyer, obviously. But for people like me who remember these from back in the day and have some spare cash, who knows how high they will go.

I'd look towards VW Mk1 Golf GTi's to see where 205 GTi prices are likely to head long term.

Short to medium term I expect them to head upwards a little more but I can't see them going E30 M3 crazy - there's simply too many surviving examples around at the moment together with the fact that Peugeot's haven't typically had the premium that older BMW M, VW and Ford RS cars have attached to them.

Good cars are selling for good money now unquestionably, but what isn't are the numerous tired examples that are being advertised at strong money and are unlikely to sell for anything close to asking. These are the cars that were selling for £500 a year or two back and owners are now thinking are worth £1500-2k.

Look at Mk1 and Mk II escorts, you could pick those up for £100 in the late eighties - now look at them, even good quality base models aren't cheap.

Supply and demand.

It does seem to rising very quickly now, 309's are a good example of over pricing though some people are asking far too much for them at this rate mine might be worth something one day

True, but I think most Ford's of that era were made with very cheap/inferior steel, unless they were of German origin (they used thicker gauge steel)

and didn't have the benefit of "modern" paint, seam sealer etc. As Tony say's... the rally heritage played a big part also for many obvious reasons.

not exactly MINT.

worth the money if it was original.

red inserts, painted bumpers and side trim, aftermarket exhaust, possible tired engine (or oil pressure gauge in op)

hard to believe there is no rust or rot underneath?? those who know 309s know that the underseal is very good at hiding tinworm. especially between fuel tank and inner sill, and the front mudflap panel

All valid points , could be the sender unit ( but its not a good picture to put up me thinks )

Exhaust can easy swap , Some cars are gamble without dropping the tank how do you decide how far gone it is ? or are we all doom merchants

Mine looks pretty good had a good poke around on the ramp yesterday and the car looks good too ;O)

Mileage counts for sod all.

maybe to you but not the majority of buyers out there. I bet given the choice of 2 similar condition cars, one with 80k and the other with 160k, the former would get the most interest.

Yip, but that's double the mileage which of course does count... My 205's done about 20,000 miles in the last ten years, current mileage is 124,000, so it's done 104,000 miles in the first 12 years of it's life, not that much by today's standard. I think in the case of the 205... mileage isn't so important unless your looking for one with genuine low mileage... i.e. 50,000/60,000 mark, in which case will be hard to find now.

You could find a car with 80,000 miles that's been run into the ground and been sat up with a world of issues or you could find a car with 160,000 miles that's never wanted for anything... I think I know what I would prefer given the time and money it takes to restore to "VGC"
