The sprung blocks apply a 'preload' direct to the planet gears, so it has a constant torque bias unlike a conventional plate diff which gets 'tighter' as it climbs the ramps up, to the point the blocks twist and lock the diff solid anyway - see http://www.phantomgrip.com for more info. Seems to be a US drag racing thing. A quick google will reveal some less than complimentary comments about them. The one thing they will do is put lots of metal into the gearbox oil as it works on metal-to metal contact.

Well, that looks shocking.

Someone else's description of the working: http://mycomputerninja.com/?p=440

I just can't see that working, relying on the edge of the spider gears to provide friction is surely only going to be disastrous!

On the plus side, there are many people to laugh at on some american forums as a result of this, just a quick google is quite amusing.

People seriously use those? I'd of thought the springs would need to be a lot heavier to get any useful pre-load onto the gears. As mentioned though, whatever springs are fitted all it's gonna do is f*** the gears and fill the box with glitter!

Oh they have that covered! They sell an "upgrade" kit with stronger springs, their "xtreme" series. Faster gear destruction!
