My 205 Cti 170,000 Miles

Was looking for a cheap reliable winter car while my 1989 Mini was being retired from daily duties, this popped up on pistonheads, went for a butchers, did a deal and it is mine :)

Hopefully those photos will work.
Done a small amount of work since purchase. Had the cambelt/tensioner/pump done and also changed all the filters and oil for piece of mind.
As well as this i replaced little things such as brake lines at the rear as well as a fuel line as it looked far too corroded, again just for piece of mind.
That got the car running like a dream and I had her on a dyno to see how it was performing. Positive results, a few horses missing put a good even strong pull all through the rev range...very impressed.
Into the daily commute and it hasn't been faultless, I've had idling issues which i know are common and most recently the oil pressure switch has started leaking quite heavily so the car is laid up for a few days while i wait for the part to arrive.
I love the way it drives and the engine really is a treat, super revvy and a great throttle response, really makes driving a joy. The handling is pretty sharp and it is very close to the mini in the way its a fun point and go experience.
The hood is electric and the motor grumbles but always does the job, however the hood itself could benefit with a replacement, this is something i am considering but might leave for now. It has a few repairs and drips but only in a few places and only in HEAVY rain. The motor fluid is also quite low but havent worked out how to replace the fluid and what with quite yet.
The to do list reads so far:
New Hood (maybe)
Hood fluid top up
Sort oil leak (waiting on part)
Fix passenger window (stiff/wont wind down)
Fix drivers window(winds down one day but not the next)
Source tool for lowering spare wheel cage
Stone chip/underseal areas above spare wheel
Have tiny ding removed from drivers door
Think thats about it :)

That looks very tidy for 170k if the pictures are representative! Paint still looks a nice deep red, seats in good nick, and even the carpet doesn't look to have faded too badly unlike most CTi's that I've seen.

 

With regards the fluid for the roof motor, it's a 5 years odd since I did it, but from memory it's ATF D2 fluid that you need, and you remove one of the bolts and fill through the hole. All should be revealed if you do a search :)

The tool for lowering the spare wheel cage is the 'other' end of the wheel brace, which should be clipped in the o/s inner wing. That's if it's still there! And providing the thread hasn't rusted and seized on said long bolt...!

but i cant help but think you must be loopy, a convertible normally people buy for the summer time. Winter with convertibles just seems a little strange :P

Nothing wrong with cti's in winter the roof has got a built in quilt after all, only problem with the roof design is the wind noise on the front lip, anything over 50mph is a nightmare. Very tidy car that until you see the grot under the bonnet :lol:

 

Did you get this from worksop by any chance?

If you could, can you post up a pic of the routing of the hydraulic pipes for the roof actuators. Particularly the passenger side one.

 

I'm converting mine to electric roof and I've never seen one up close, so it's been a bit of guess work for me.

 

My restoration project is in my sig if you want a gander.

Have to remember that i drove a leaky rusty cold leaky rusty and cold mini for four years everyday 11,000 miles a year so this is quite a luxury for me :) Dont even need ear plugs on the motorway which is nice.

 

The jack is just a generic one so doesnt fit under the bonnet and the wheel brace is missing so need to source an original one.

 

Oil leak is sorted and idling is now sorted, just stripped the passenger door down and will have a look at the regulator tomorrow.

 

Dont really see much wrong under the bonnet :( Its fairly clean and well used, might give it a spruce up when i can be bothered though. The car is from around the mansfield/nottingham area yes, it now lives with me in the sunny sunny black country.

 

Car came with quite a lot of history as well which is good, also some evidence of an engine rebuild at some point according to an old advert for the car but no history to back this up.

 

A nice surprise to see when the car was up on the ramps the other day was very new looking rear suspension/axle/rubber mounts so someone has obviously spent a few pennies at some point.

Bit of a non update but thought i best try and keep this page going :)

 

Nothing much to report, just been driving the thing! Been loving a bit of top down motoring and the engine really is a peach.

 

Car hasn't cost me anything recently so going to treat it to a few things.

 

Sloppy gear change is first on the list, it really is bad and slowly getting worse, its starting to worry me so its first on the list.

Iv seen the kit of KamRacing that looks like it will do the job, does anyone have any experience of this kit?

 

Also found a local specalist im going to visit called "The Pug Shop" in the west midlands, to investigate what a suspect is an overfueling issue, and to hopefully generally give the car a once over.

I am sure replacement gear link rods will make an improvement. But before you part with your dosh, have a look at the ball knuckle on the subframe that the gear linkage pivots on. You'll soon see where I mean if you look underneath. This ball works loose and makes the gear change awful. Simple fix is to tighten the nut underneath with a 13mm deep socket. Worth also looking at the quadrant also on the subframe, this should pivot around its bolt but not have slop in it up/down. If it has it is down to a couple of small nylon bushes being worn, these can be bought cheaply enough or there are some bronze replacements out there. These two things can make a big improvement.

I think that Pug shop place has something to do with Ralph Pinder who Hill Climb's a 205

 

Linkage wise check the ball joint on the subframe first as this cause's the most wobble, worn linkages just normally fall off, I have a full range in my Ebay shop

No door pockets in a CTi then? also the AFM is inverted 90 degrees, does this make any difference in throttle response? to release the spare wheel, all you have to do is apply upwards pressure on the tyre and the cage will release off the hook... typically you won't be able to do it any other way as the bolt is common to seizure.

Definitely still cherry red, nice motor :)

There are door pockets yes aha, they just happen to be hidden in all those photos.

Having the seats bolsters re foamed and a few other litte jobs.

 

Will stick it through 12 Months MOT and then shel be for sale

I think that is Trevor Mudds old CTI. He used to be the events guy for the Peugeot Sport Club years ago and has a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 1 as well which he has had for years! It was a tidy car, despite the miles
