What Mpg Do You Get - 205

Recommended Posts

Weser

I am sure its been covered before, however I am asking again.

I have had issues with my MPG but think I may have solved it now. Think my new coolant sensor was faulty. Anyway I got 31mpg from my last tank out of a 1.9 gti. This tank is looking more like 36mpg so I think thats good in the colder weather.

Just wondering if that is the sort of right Mpg to be expecting.

What's yours like around town WP? Mine is fine on a run, but drops off a cliff in town.

Half of the daily run is town, though thankfully I don't make a habit of sitting in traffic if at all possible, and Cardiff isn't that big.

I'd encourage anyone not to use Welshpug's figures as a yardstick to measure by, as he is at the exceptional end of the scale :P

I've always been of the opinion that anything around low 30s for mixed driving or ~35 for long runs on an 8v is about the right ballpark. It's absolutely key to remember that everyone's driving style and circumstances are different and the smallest of factors can impact the MPG that you see. If you're comparing to other people, only get concerned if your own average is significantly lower than other people are getting. Or if you keep a track of your own MPG (I use an Android app to track every fill up, which then tracks MPG as a result) then you should be able to notice if you start to see a reduction in economy that could point towards something not working correctly/as effiently as it should. Quite often when this question is raised, some bone head will say "If you care about MPG then you are driving the wrong car", but monitoring your economy is a good indicator of the health of the car.

Anthony managed similar figures to myself, we're not all lead footed you know :P

I know on the Austria road trip George and myself managed around 38 mpg from the V6 cruising at 75-80 mph.

That doesn't surprise me about the V6. Decent management, presumably longer gearing, plus if it's anything like my Alfa was then the engine would have been doing virtually nothing to keep the fly weight 205 trundling along at that speed. Bet they're a lot more thirsty in town though, as every time you are stopped at traffic lights you've got an extra 2 cylinders gulping fuel.

About 38mpg from me, I'm sure it would go way over 40 if I drove like an old lady, but that's not what these cars are about!

Has the potantial to fall a lot lower with enthusiastic driving, but from when it was last on the roads a couple of years ago, this is what I got (Using brim-to-brim calculation method)

This is from a TB'd, cammed 145ish bhp 1.6 TU engine.

I'm averaging about 54mpg in my 406 estate, but that gets a daily motorway cruise on my commute to work, so it's got an easy life.

Yep, and without the benefit of modern Motronic management at that ;)

The average from my near-standard 1.9 GTi (non-CAT Jetronic) is 37.2mpg over the last year and 9300 miles. Best was 42.7mpg.

That's mostly on my daily commute, which is a mixture of stop-start, A-road and motorway. It gets driven in anger so to speak with the tacho straying into the warpaint as and when required to make progress on a daily basis.

It's surprising just how economical an 8v engine can be when it's in good order and set up properly. The problem is that the majority of them aren't and hence people think that mpg figures in the 20's are normal out on the open road.

For comparison, my 306 HDi has averaged 50.6mpg over 46300 miles in 3 years.

As mentioned further up I managed to get 38+ mpg (I thought we worked it out as 41?) from my V6 on a non stop leg back from Austria, mostly motorway cruising.

GLP: It does use more around town but it still isn't too bad, I don't do a lot of town driving in it so haven't got an idea on a figure. Certainly for the week I spent at the Nurburgring, where it was driven quite hard on and off the track, I still got 250 miles to a full tank.

31mpg sounds good.

I can get between 15 and best 34mpg depends how addicted I am to the induction noise!

Not very relevant not being a XU 8v but hey. With the 6speed I used to get over 40mpg from my GTI6 on a run, and similar to George I've had high 30's on a run to France, 2 up with luggage not hanging around.

However I've not got much hope for the new V6!

Well to update this a bit I just got 35mpg from my last tank. I am pretty happy. Anthony seems to be some sort of miracle worker to get those figures especially if the pedal hits the metal sometimes. Guess I have something to aim for!

Driving style has a massive bearing, as does mechanical sympathy, and proper setup of the management, something that many seem to struggle with.

Seems I am not particularly heavy on my brakes either, I do just fine with standard 1.9 brake setup and purely fitted some 1144 pads as I got them cheap, I coped more than fine for years on bog standard Textar o.e pads.

Some of my best mpg runs have been fast A-road blasts through Wales :D

Anyhting between 25-35 is what I am at depending a lot of how trigger happy my right foot is. But a average of 30 is where i am at the most. Which i think I just awesome compared to the age of the car and its fuel tech plus how I drive the car.
