Mi16 Ok To Use Normal Grade Fuel?

Recommended Posts

yorkshirekowboy

Hello, 205 been in storage now for 2 years and wanting to start it up. I bought some normal unleaded fuel for my lawnmower and have a Jerry can spare. When it was on the road I used optimax/v power. Would normal unleaded be ok to put into it so I can start it up now and again? Regards danby

As far as i know it is safe using normal unleaded if you run original mapping.however ath my car i could notice a great difference at power/mpg too.So personally i dont find a good reason for using low grade petrol.

Well I'm using standard mi16 ecu setup so that ok?

The recommended fuel for D6C (not cat) was leaded 97RON but i guess no problem with 95..

Will be honest that I know little about the Mi16 specifically but I do know a bit about fuels - if the recommended fuel is 97 RON then unless the Mi16 has a knock sensor then I'd not use 95 RON in it if it were mine. Well, not unless I wanted to risk a bill for a rebuild anyway.

No knock sensor. This is why i think peugeot choosed a safe way to map it in order not beeing sensitive with bad fuel..but i cant verify it.perhaps someone else?

Bad 97 though, not bad 95. I work for an OEM and I know how conservative the guys doing the mapping are. Good 95 is 'probably' ok on a conservative OEM 97 map but I'd not run mine on it.

Conservative mapping nowadays with all these sensors..but 25yr ago? perhaps it was different.i run on mine always 97minimun as runs much smoother and it gives better mpg.so the same cost finally.

It will be fine to start on the mower fuel in the shed, under no load. Even driving gently down to the servo will be fine, then fill with 97/98.

I'm not sure what you mean be a "safe" or "conservative" map. The original map for the Mi16 is the "correct" one, given its level of tune. ie CR, camshaft, rod length etc.

I'd be more concerned about the fuel thats been left in the tank for 2 years! Fuel seems to go 'off' very quickly nowadays. Or did you completely drain it?

Well I start it up every couple of months, so the fuel should be ok, when mixed with newer fuel. I will just pit the higher grade stuff if I think.

I mean perhaps less advanced ignition or perhaps a bit rich mixture for more reliability? can it works this way? then why is better a chipped ecu on a standard engine?

I agree!

When did the mi16 get knock sensor? Easy way to check if my d6c has one?

I read somewhere about mi16s in Egypt being driven on very low grade fuel. like 91

No knock sensor at 2row ecu/motronic 4.1

91RON possible with cat version with lower compression.Or no possibility for better fuel.

The 2-row ECUs can use 95RON if you put a 750 ohm resistor between the two spade terminals near the ECU plug. It will retard the timing slightly under load.

3 row ECU mi16 has knock sensor.

Mine ran better on 95 than 98.

anyone remember leaded 5 star? used to nip the eyes sitting behind a motor running it... could notice the difference just driving out of the filling station... as said by PF, 95 won't or shouldn't do any harm as long as engine isn't under load... have experimented with diesel fuels from Shell recently, mostly to collect the LEGO cars for my nephew (only available with Shell NITRO) and the added expense is definitely countered by better MPG.... so false economy running standard 95 pump fuel in my view.

this doesn't make sense for a healthy engine..or does? any possible explanation? :)

Mac: This is definitely true! also the engine remains cleaner of deposits...

DFW was designed to run on 91.

The chip I sell has less advance.

peter: Yes i remember once you had said it but i mean..obvious your chip is better than original mapping..so peugeot's original is 'right' but not the best..dont know if it has with emmisions or fuel sensitivity though..
