Intercoolers

I am looking at getting a bigger intercooler for my 1.9 GTi Turbo Technics car, before I start playing with extra boost. I know a few people on here have done conversions and some of you may have already fitted larger intercoolers to a Turbo Technics car, if so, what car did you get it from?

I am hoping to retain the standard valance and grill if possible. I know some companies will make them up to your specification, but I am looking to ideally take one off the shelf as I am guessing it would be cheaper.

well im trying to think of a intercooler to fit to mine, I think i will use the 2wd cosworth intercooler underneath the radiator, slightly behind it though.

Or if not

a intercooler to fit infront of the radiator where the fans go, and move the bumper out slightly

Not sure about the turbo techinics intercooler, How big is it? Is it alloy?

cheers lee

maybe using a new metal rad frame (like Kev-G + co's mi conversion one?) and having a fan behind the rad where it belongs, that would give you a fair bit of space in front to fit an intercooler?

I've not measured the TT intercooler for size, not even sure if it is alloy! It's pretty small and to be honest, I don't think it gets the best flow of air where it is, part gets covered by the bumper. It goes where a second fan would go, at a guess I'd say it's something like 250mm by 300mm.

I'm thinking of an intercooler lower mounted to get better air flow and the cooler air.

I have a cosworth 2wd intercooler mounted at the base of the valence, with the corresponding part of the valence cut away to aid air flow.

Its a good fit but has to sit slightly off centre so not to foul the sump.

Ive read a few converstions that have used the intercooler from a Renault 5 GT...Im guessing this is of a very similiar size to the one TT used themselves.

Stew...I notice the cosworth intercooler has the pipe connectors at the sides, do these clear the radiator lenghwise or is the intercooler fitted below the rad?

If you fit a Citroen BX16v rad then a R5GTT Intercooler will sit nicely next to it.

Zed

The intercooler is fitted below the rad. Right at the base of the valence.

The one I use for the 1.4 comes from a Lancia Integrale:

Thanks for the replies. I think the Renault 5 GT Turbo intercooler is probably a similar size to the 205 Turbo Technics one isn't it? I've also noticed that Ford Fiesta Turbos have an intercooler that is practically the same as the 205, did Turbo Technics just take an off-the-shelf intercooler for their 205 conversion?

I've contacted http://www.grsmotorsport.co.uk/ for a quote on a custom intercooler, they are going to send through some paperwork for me to go through within the next few days. However, the intercoolers they make are 64mm thick, I've got to go and measure to see if that'll fit.

Pieter Oonincx: Had a look at your site, nice turbo conversion on the 1.4.
