Bit Of Inspiration

Recommended Posts

I'm lucky enough to work for an engineering company so I have all the tools, machines etc you can imagine at my finger tips, this makes things very easy for me. I'm often told how jammy I am (in that respect anyways :P) and that it's impossible to do decent projects at home with basic tools so here's a little bit of inspiration for those folk.

I was drafted in at the end of the project to help with some aluminium welding and fit the omex, everything else has been done by drew(20 year old numpty) in a wooden garage with a welder and a drill press. He's had no help off forums, he's just seen a picture and had a go. We've run it up to temp tonight and it's all ready for mapping in the new year! Sounds bloody awesome :)

A valiant effort I'm sure you'll all agree!

Can you get a few more pics of the coil pack cover. Looks interesting!

Well spotted! It's just folded 16 gauge ally, he made it to cover the xsi coil pack

Why would he need to cover the XSi coil pack? They fit in perfectly with there own cover anyway!

Looks fantastic. Really wish i had of taken the time and gone with a turbo conversion instead of supercharger for my 306. Maybe i can add a turbo at a later date :D

Usually turbo installs look a right mess, this though is very impressive, fair play to him! Young chap too.

One thing though, why has he installed the turbo at that angle ? Could that not potentially cause premature wear on the bearings?

Oh and is that his boost gauge next to the cam belt cover? lol

Xsi cover doesnt fit the rs head.

I thought the XSi coil pack fitted if you take off a few of the tabs that the original separate coils bolted to? Ive seen a few people do this now.

No idea about turbo angle, suck it and see I guess!

The coil pack was an all in one job off a 2.0 16v, I assumed it was an xsi but perhaps not?! He fitted and made the cover anyways, it sparks and looks good so who am I to argue! :P

Harni, supercharger is best ;)

I'll pass on the comments, merry Christmas chaps!

Oh and the boost gauge was only a temporary fit so we could see what was going off

as said, the xsi coil pack can be made to fit easily, but not the cover, nice job though :)

I'd be wary of excessive heat build up under it cooking the coils especially with a turbo in the bay too, though those types aren't known to fail particularly, easy enough to retrofit the 8 valve item and some leads if he has any issues.

Yeah, thinking about it he pulled the plastic top cover off as it didn't fit ;)

Again, suck it and see with the coil and heat, f***ing stupid hot turbos!

Ah thats probably what I've seen in the past then. The XSi pack modified to fit with the original GTi cover on top. I was going to use a coil pack and leads on mine but i can't find a set of leads that will be suitable! Should probably look harder :P

It looks awesome in that photo, it's standard (later) Miami though! Must be the lighting or camera making it look different.

nice work.

possibly find it smokes on idle or on cold start with turbo at that angle.. I know space is a premium but wastegate location could be better.. I presume the long pipe up to it is from the uppipe to the turbo? so the short outlet of wastegate goes into downpipe? or is the longer pipe at the front the outlet from wastegate?

I hought the positioning of the waste gate is pretty good?! It's angled off the manifold as per turbo smarts recommendation, the long pipe is the screamer which vents to atmosphere in the wheel arch. Possibly difficult to tell off the picture?
