Recommended Posts

jamie_1992

A while back I read a topic on where to get a longer speedo drive for a 205 converted to gti6 with 205 gear box but can't find it

Dose anyone know what I need or a link to the topic

I think he asking is

Is thre a longer cable that can be used to get more clearance what a GTi6 motor is fitted?

Mine is super close to the headers also but yet to have any problems. It would be nice to gain more clearance to tidy it up a little.

Is there a longer cable that works with a 205 cluster..

if he is asking that, then yes, 405 cable is about 4-5" longer and fits fine.

However IMO it wont really help, best option is to find some heat shielding material and add more to the existing original protective sheath.

4-5 inches would be nice! Definitely make a difference on my car. Mine is about 2cm away from the exhaust at the minute.

That's the thing, due to where the cable goes you just can't avoid it being close to the manifold.

Jamie, just sounds like the clips are broken.

Could well be if I have to buy new might be worth getting the longer

I would imagine that any 405 RHD cable should fit.

I recently fitted a speedo cable I removed from a late 405 diesel onto a 205 GTi-6 recently and it fitted fine once you moved the ball that sits in the bulkhead grommit along a bit. It gives a nice bit of extra length and now sits well away from the exhaust manifold.

As said, I would be tempted to add some form of heat protection to it anyway for long term protection.

The only issue with the 405 cables is that they don't clip onto the back of the 205 clocks properly. Not a major issue as I just leave the cable inside the car a little too long so that it's pressing against the backs of the clocks once they're screwed down and won't be going anywhere.

All 405 rhd cables are the same, i thought they did clip in fine, though its been a while since i've had a 405 dashboard apart.

I remeber someone asking about using an electronic speedo head, as simple as a cable is, electrickery seems quite tempting now, no bouncy needles and melted cables.

That was me and I have what appears to be a suitable speedo head at home, just need to test the theory in the New Year :)

I can't vouch for all 405 cables, but certainly the two late 405 diesel OE speedo cables I removed from cars in a scrappy both had a fitting at the speedo end that won't clip onto the back of 205 clocks properly.

The new OE 405 cable I've got still in a bag from Peugeot does have the usual 205 style fitting however, so I'm not quite sure when they changed. The new cable also differs where the ball is - the original cables have a ball inside a fixed grommit, whereas the new OE cable just has a ball, again like 205 cables.

You are correct Anthony, the 405 cables do not have the little clips on the end. I ended up using tiny cable ties on the end to secure it as I got fed up of the speedo not working! I covered it in heat protective material too.

Just found a picutre
