A Plea To Amatuer Mechanics

Please be careful with anti-freeze

I came home to a very poorly cat last night, acting very out of character and not his usual meowing self.

We took him to the emergency vets who checked him over to make sure he hadn't been hit by a car or anything and found nothing out of the ordinary.

They recommended a blood test to test his kidney functions.

In a test that should've taken half an hour, within 10 minutes the results were off the charts and it was clear that he was going through acute kidney failure.

They then recommended a test should be done to clarify the cause. Some wild flowers can cause kidney problems and can be treated.

The test came back as positive for the poisonous ingredient of anti-freeze.

There's no treatment, and we had to make the agonising decision to have him put to sleep before it became too painful for him.

He was a very lively and very active cat up until point, we were shocked how quickly this happened.

We don't know where he got it from, it certainly wasn't our garage.

So please be careful with this stuff, make sure it is used carefully and disposed of responsibly. Don't forget that it's sweet to the taste, so cats, dogs, even small children could ingest it.

Needless to say we are both devastated, and this could've been avoided if more people knew how dangerous this stuff is

Feel for you, it's never nice to loose a pet, especially in situations like this.

By the way, you might want to report it to the police and RSPCA in-case it was deliberate. I hope it wasn't and was just an accident, but still report it.

Dean

Sad News fella, I have two cats and a dog and would be devastated if this happened to one of them. Consider me well informed, even though i know the dangers of car products. :(

Sorry to hear this mate. As someone said above, might want to report it to the police just in case it's been done deliberately :(

It WILL be someone local to you that's done it on purpose.

Its a favourite to put it on tuna to mask it.

There are some evil folk about!

As others have said I'd report it if I were you - there are some sick weirdo's about that take delight in that sort of thing

About a year ago there was a report in out local paper about a guy who didn't like his neighbours cat and after he saw it regularly drinking from a massive puddle in the road during the day, he poured coolant into the puddle and the cat died (as well as 1 other local cat that had done the same). There was also an instance down the road from me where a few dogs got poisoned by some muppet that had deliberately put out poison in a part wooded area where people walked their dogs  His reasoning was he did it because he got fed up with people not cleaning up their dog poop  Clearly not right in the head.

Sorry to hear about the cat :( .

Had the same issue with a park near the city centre where some c*nt/s think its a good idea to contaminate puddles with antifreeze.

I never let my dog drink from puddles

Here's the little guy in question; Phil the cat (affectionately known as Professor Cat Face)

I have reported it to the RSPCA, just waiting for a response.

Thanks for the messages of condolence

That sucks, sorry to hear about this John, your cat looked a proper character.

Neat anti freeze is nasty stuff, even if its not taken internally for anyone who comes into contact with it.

I laid in a puddle of new undiluted antifreeze when doing Kezzers cambelt & water pump & my shoulder came out in a nasty rash which lasted for almost a week, almost like a light chemical burn after just minutes of contact.

Really sorry to hear about your cat - not nice. Difficult to think that someone would be nasty enough to do this on purpose, but sadly others might be right on this one.

Sorry to hear about your cat, awful news. Pets are part of the family.

I hope this wasn't malicious and just a terrible accident.

Sorry to hear this :(

As others have said, pets are like members of the family so its horrible when they go especially under circumstances like this. You would like to think that it was just an accident somehow but unfortunately people have been known to do things like this. One reason why i keep such an eye on my dog when taking him out with knowing what some of the locals are like!
