Some Money Spent And Now Its Back On The Road

Recommended Posts

Just got my gti back on the road after treating it a fair bit. Its had a refurbished rear beam, clutch, battery, rad, seat bolster and numerous other little bits and pieces. Its only a standard 1.9 but now it feels great - big grin factor. The rear beam has made a massive difference and was worth every penny. The car is now my daily driver and comuting is good fun.

Still got jobs to do - there are always things to do! Next up is refurbishing the heater fan, fitting a new ecu coolant temperature sensor to hopefully impove my fueling, taking the trim off treating it with plasticare and reffiting it correctly and sorting the little bits of body work.

Good to hear it's back on the road :) I don't tend to use mine as a daily any more, but whenever I did it was always a good drive & never let me down. With what you've done to yours hopefully it will be the same case for you :)

If all goes to plan job wise next year, I'm hoping to put some £££ aside to get the suspension on mine completely refreshed as that's the one thing I've not been able to do in the last 5 years I've had mine.

One thing you don't mention is dampers- a new set absolutely transforms the car. If you haven't changed them then please consider doing so!

Did the dampers at the same time as the rear beam. Seemed silly not too. Have dones so much I can't remember it all!

It wasn't the plan when I bought it to use as a daily however I was in a postion where I had to sell some cars and didnt really want to sell it so the only option was to use it and why not its good fun. Like you say hopefully it will be reliable and enjoyable for a while.

I know everyone loves a picture but honestly I didnt take any during the process of doing all the bits - stupid! If I took one now it would just be a laser green gti ha

I will get a couple at the weekend in the light and stick them up!

Glad to hear that you're enjoying it after all the work :)

There's no reason why 205's can't be reliable and give great service as a daily driver, they just need previous neglect and bodges sorting and proper servicing and preventative maintenance to keep them in tip top condition. Do that, and they're great - I used my standard 1.9 throughout the summer and autumn this year and it didn't miss a beat, nor did it when I took it on a 3000 mile trip around Europe.

The difference that a rebuilt beam, fresh dampers and new bushes all round make is massive too - the slow degradation over time means that you often don't realise just how off the boil it is. It's a fair bit of time and money of course, but it's something that's well worth doing if you're intending to keep the car and enjoy it.

Yes I can't believe the difference it has made. Well worth getting all the jobs done. I will go over more of the car in the coming months and get it more up to scratch.
