Starter Motor

Recommended Posts

Hi I am having Starter motor problems .At least thats what I believe as every now and again ( and getting more frequent ) the car will not start .All you get when it does not is a clunk and the dashboard lights dim .If you keep trying the ignition eventually after a few goes it will start .Has anyone got a good one for sale ? I am also thinking maybe first I should take it off .In which case is it simpler to take the rad out and get at it from there ? Any help or comments appreciated .Thanks .

Whilst the starter motor can give this fault, particularly the original "fat bodied" starters, it's also often caused by voltage loss along the starter solenoid wiring - the brown multiplug near the gearbox and bodged alarm installations being two common causes.

If you're replacing the starter motor, I would personally fit a slim line starter as found on most late 90's Peugeot/Citroen models with an XU engine - 306, 406 etc. These are typically more reliable, crank over stronger, and if you're looking at used units, are much newer than 205 era ones.

In relation to what Anthony has posted - definitely check the wiring for the starter solenoid & brown multiplug.

My 205 did the same repeatedly to varying degrees over the space of the last 2 years - In my case I got fed up with it and gave the car to Miles @ Pug Racing who stripped the wiring back on those connections and did new ones including the brown multiplug and the car has been fine ever since. Plus I'm still running the starter motor that was on the car before the starting problems began.

Hi thanks for the help guys .Does anyone know what the function of each lead on this brown multiplug is ? I got to it and did find some minimal corrosion on the inside of the plug and socket pins .I cleaned up the pins but the problem still persists .In addition I have had an intermittent fuel pump problem . On some occasions the fuel pump does not run .I have had to feed the live from elsewhere directly to the relevant fuse for the pump and the the Pug runs .Once this has been done and the temp live removed the car will run and start fine for an unpredictable time .Is it possible that the Starter problem is connected ? If I have read the circuit diagram correctly ( and maybe I have not ) the live feed from the starter motor gives the initial starting voltage for the Tachy relay .

My car had this problem when I first bought it, and after I started driving it it went away. I thought it was a case of a car not being driven enough as I drive it much more than the previous owner. It's been months since it happened, but today it did, and it's worse than before. So where can I find this brown multiplug? Where is it in the engine bay, and which wires should I look to replace?

The brown " multi-pain" plug , again .! I was having a few different problems from time to time and after reading through the forums I began to realise that the B.M.P. was the root of all evil .After checking the wires and the terminals for damage / corrosion and renewing , I coated the plug in G20 water repellent and enclosed it in a plastic water tight canister, with a lid . I cable-tied it in and sprayed the outside with G20 . So far so good !
