No More Discs In The Screen From October '14

For those who haven't seen the news yet, this is one of the things that was proposed in the Autumn statement, with the plan for it to come into effect from October next year.

The way I see it, it's a good idea in theory (hopefully in practice) but it will be interesting to see how well it works when the inevitable DVLA data entry muck-ups, computer failures, lack of updates, etc, occur

Evidently you'll also have the option to spread the cost by paying monthly by DD - at a nice rate of interest however

paying by DD will actually cost less than it does to pay for 6 months (there's an admin fee on the 6 month disc) though will add a small percentage to the 12 monthly fee.

other than no longer being fined for non-displaying, it wont change anything one bit as its all on computer already.

unfortunately it doesn't sound like you can buy car tax per month, which IMO would have been a good move.

It might sound odd but I think I'll miss the tax disc. For me its always been quite an event getting various vehicles properly on the road, especially if its a project of some kind or another after weeks of work. First stop MOT station, then straight up the road to the local post office for a tax disc, then off on the first proper maiden voyage!

I agree Tom, also silly little things like being able to spot a replica by its Tax disc.

Before buying them online I used to get them from a post office near work. I always liked the fact it was stamped with Trafalgar Square!

5% for monthly DD, and they're reducing the 10% for a six monther to 5% as well.

Quite. I can't really get my head around all the fuss being made on various forums. It's just the same as they did with the MOT - quietly - a couple of years ago. The computer record and enforcement's already there, they're merely changing the "primary" from the certificate to the computer record.

indeed, they don't need to implement any new systems, they will save themselves millions in printing car tax discs and postage and envelopes.

Some people just hate change, and will always either find or invent something to complain about.

Fantastic, its great. They already do it in NSW in Australia. I hate crap in my windscreen, zero stickers any where on my cars.

Good news for me. Can tax the car for the 1 month I need it for a multi-venue event and bollocks to the other 11. My god, something they've done that'll actually save me money :)

Nope. You're still buying 6mo or 12mo tax. The ONLY difference is that you don't get a piece of paper, and can pay for a 12mo by monthly DD, just like insurance or TV licence. Oh, and it's _slightly_ cheaper for a 6mo.

Untaxing the car must be easier though as it's all online and there's no disc to send back.

Like you say though I suspect you would still have to sighn up to 6 months upfront whether that be paying it in full or siging up to an agreement for 6 installments.

I want to know how you will know if a second hand car is taxed before buying if when buying you have no access to the internet. And coppers on the beat can't just walk down the street checking. It's a good visual aid to see if a car is on the road. Il miss it. At least you had a piece of paper for the money you where spending rather than nout and still bad roads.

The same way you know currently that they haven't applied for a refund and ticked the "Sorry, but I lost the disc" box.

The same way you know currently that the MOT receipt sheet isn't a home-brew.

Iv never considered when buying a car that someone would be that sly.

Handy on my opinion as I'm having a nightmare replacing the disc that got lost in the post by the dvla!

The amount I've had nicked over the years from bikes is unreal.

What they should do of course is like in France where they simply got rid of it altogether.

As welshpug knd of mentioned there some kind of 'pay as you go' car taxing system would be handy as like a few other guys on here i only get my 205 out at certain times of the year and it is such a faff SORNing the thing then sending tax discs back and waiting for refunds to come through the post!!!Especially as we have to other cars in the family besides the 205!!
