Will This 309 Rack Fit My 205 Gti

Recommended Posts

Bovien

I want to install a PAS rack on my non pas 205 GTI to get the quicker steering. However, it is impossible to find a 205 rack, so I have found the attached 309 rack.

However, will that fit my lower non PAS steering column? I can't find a lower joint. I know that the 205 joint can be square or round, but I'm not sure which I have and I'm not sure if I can spot it without taking my rack apart?

Thanks!

The rack will fit, 205 & 309 PAS rack is the same but you will need a PAS specific intermediate section from a PAS equipped car.

A 309 one will fit, can't you get the one from the car this rack is off?

The spline is a different diameter on the non pas & pas rack afik, what year is your car, the change to square pinion was around 89 - 90 iirc.

Ok, so PAS and non-PAS are two different columns? My car is '89 the donor is '90 I think. Since mine is '89, is there a chance I will have a round that will fit or will that be a different diameter as well?

If so, I'll need to search a bit more for a 309 column to get the joint.. Only way, I guess

mine was a round splined column, car assembled in april 89 registered in august on a G.

doesn't have to be a 309 lower column, a 205 one will do as well.

So if mine is round, the rack should fit?

PAS 205 rack or parts are impossible to find in DK as PAS cars vere very very seldom sold. I'm guessing pricing due to our taxes

IIRC the PAS and non PAS columns are different lengths even if they have the same (splined or square) fitting. The PAS columns are slightly shorter as the pinion is higher up on the rack due to the hydraulic fittings.

That's correct - 205/309 PAS lower column is shorter than a non-PAS.

Whether a non-PAS one will fit, like when you do a Xsara VTS rack swap, I don't know.

Is the lower column not available from the same 309 the PAS rack came from?

As long as the splines are the same you could cut, sleeve it and weld it. As long as it's done correctly there is no problems with strength or safety.

You can still get the PAS UJ's new, expensive at around £175.00

No, sadle not. Looking elsewhere

Wow, that's expensive... Maybe able to find it elsewhere, but that won't make much of a difference if the length is bad.

Weird thing is that there are reports on here about straight swaps working out without any issues...

Thaks mate, but guessing it is RHD and I'm in Denmark. Also don't need the PAS part if it, want to stay manual.

Does anyone know what the difference between the two mentioned columns is on the PAS column shown on the attached pic from service box?

Given that it specifies which you need by giving a measurement for the UJ above it, I'd guess they're different lengths.

You still need a PAS UJ no matter what, the ram can be removed but that has nothing to do with the top part of the rack
