My 2Nd 205

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have just purchased my 2nd ever 205 gti 1.6 in Miami blue. 15 years after my 1st .

I rescued it from being turned into a rally car last week with the intention or making it as original as possible.

It was a bit of a gamble as I purchased on eBay without seeing it. Crazy I know.

Mechanically is seems ok. New engine in 2009. Rebuild 3 months ago. Though it does seem a little tight which is concerning me a little.

The paintwork is decent for the most part apart from the tailgate which is a different colour and has lacquer issues. Not sure if I should paint or hunt for a straight replacement? The rear valance is red underneath and badly painted blue so that will need doing.

There are a few parking dings on both doors so unsure whether to go for PDR or body shop or even replacement? The bonnet has a few pimple dents, not sure how that would happen and not sure that can be fixed without replacing.

Bought it on Tuesday last week and so far I have done the following just to make drivable.

New pirellis all round

New front discs and pads

New near side cv boots

New engine mount

Tightened handbrake

I have also purchased some bits that were missing or damaged.

Floor mats

Boot lining and mat

Glove box

Gear gator

Rear view mirror

Radio antenna

Having had 1st proper look round the car yesterday i found other problems.

Front driving lamps rusty and wet inside

Oil pressure and temp gauges not working

Heater fan rattling

Gearbox makes a rubbing sound when moving gears quickly

Stitching has come away in 3 or 4 places on the leather seats

Wheels are in good condition but I'll probably get the powder coated anyway.

Paid 1950 for the car, and I have 1500 to 2000 to get it as clean as possible. I have spent 800 so far.

If be interested in any opinions on anything of the above and especially if somebody can recommend a specialist in the northwest, as close the chorley/Preston as possible. I am no mechanic but local garage who did the above work reckon the car was is good nick mechanically. But speaking to him he had no experience of 205's at all which did bother me a little.

Cheers

HJ

Fresh gear oil, £6 - I used 75/80.

Heater fan is likely to be bushes, lots of us have spares in our sheds, put up a wanted advert.

Oil pressure sensors rarely fail. Likely to be the wiring. You'll likely find your issue is the brown multiplug under the airflow meter / on top of the airbox. The best bet if you want to restore the car would be to rewire all of the wires for the engine sensors as they degrade quite badly. Youll find it easiest to remove the onlet manifold and all the assocoated gubbings, which will expose the wiring to the pressure sender, switch, alt., Starter, and also gove you a good opportunity to clean up the engine.

I personally hate the powdercoated look on the original wheels, but everybody is different.

The seats can be sorted by an upholsterer, but there is also a guy on here, dch... cant remember the full name - he can possibly do them too.

Strong money for the car, but I imagine she's in good hands with a modest budget like youra :)

Hi HJ, sounds good, I'm sure you will have a great car when you have finished. Addictive these little cars, I've got 3 and am looking to buying another over the next few days, my daughter thinks I may have a problem and she maybe right, but my main obstacle was the wife but she is very understanding! long may it continue, they are all in red and the other I'm looking at is in red.......god knows why they just seem to fall that way....I'm sure somebody will reply to you soon with regard to specialists in your area and look forward to seeing some pics in the future, enjoy

Mick, I can help with the seats as I am only a few miles away.

Get along to the Lancs PSCUK meets if you can too in Dalton, near Parbold - loads of info discussed every month.

Thanks for the info .

I was concerned when little things kept cropping up but I looked at 2 similar cars priced at 3500 and 4000. They were obviously overpriced but I reckon I'm only a couple of bits away from being ahead of them now so quids in, in that respect.

All in good fun anyway.
