Car Dipping Question

After going to the classic car show at the nec and seeing cars being dipped im really tempted to have my dimma shell done one thing i forgot to ask when there was will this eat fiberglass as I still have bits of spoiler fitted to the car and not sure if I would need to remove these.

I would remove it all anyway, as the rot is usually behind those parts.

Really swaying towards having this done then will really know that shell is solid when i refit kit also in talks with st-performace about them poss refitting kit and painting car

There's been a very recent topic on dipping. Look it up. As with most things there's pros and cons.

The question is, will there be anything left after the dip? Thats the risk.

 

All that money only to wish you had started with a mint shell.....

I have allready repaired alot of the shell so I dont think there would be any big suprises Im just thinking that as it would strip shell would give me a really good shell to prep and paint and give me full piece of mind what will lay under kit. As I stated in my restoration thread reshelling this car was never a option as I wanted to use the orignal shell as its a factory dimma

I am just about to get mine dipped, been researching for the past month and finally decided to go for it, as others have said I hope I don't end up with a "tea bag"

 

My main driver was knowing every bit of rust is gone.

 

Will hopefully have mine done before Xmas, so will let you know how I get on.

From experience you'd be surprised what you'll discover. Even weak material will be removed and you'll be left with awkward pitted metal.

I remember a while back my dad got his Hillman Imp shell dipped, believed to be a "good" shell. After the dipping there was very little left of it as even slightly rusty material was gone, the shell was then scrapped.. Shame really.

Out of interest where are you lot looking to get your shells dipped, I will be starting to restore my brothers mini soon, and really would like to get that dipped.

I have looked on google and yell, but for the life of me I can't find anywhere.

If you dip a shell then paint it again your reassured there's no rust on it, but for how long?

Suppose if you do actually end up using the car you could get it dipped again in ten-fifteen years time? or you could just weld up what you can see and deal with it when it becomes a problem.

Both options would look the same, just one costs much more than the other and for what? peace of mind? I'd learn to live with it, unless the car is heading to a museum or something?

 

There's levels on restoration IMO which is offset to how much you plan to use the car in the future.

Acid dipping highlighted issues on my shell i'd have never known about until it got a lot worse therefore I'd expect my shell to be in better condition in 20 years time.

I have allready stripped all the front of my car and about to change the floor,sills and rear arches so not alot more places that i wouldnt find so still very unsure as not having it done would save me £900 and the car is not going to e used alot when its done so still on the fence with it at the moment.

The two companies I looked at were SPL and Envirostip (same people Batfink used).

 

I finally decided on envirostrip after speaking to a few people that had used them and talking over the project with them.

 

I still am not sure what to expect but they are picking my shell up on Tuesday and I'll let you know how I get on.

 

Providing I get back something that's workable :unsure: and I follow this with quality finishing I hope the shell should be good for another 20 years without having to worry about rust.

When you get the shell back wear gloves when handling the car. The acids and sweat from your hands will damage the protective coating they do on the final dip. This will allow light surface rust to start to form. Get it primered and all is good...
