Gti Running Gear

Hi all, im gonna be buying a 205 shortly for my type r install. From what im lead to beleive xu or tu doesnt matter too much so ive found a very clean 1.6xl auto for about 500 quid with 40000 miles on the clock. So my questions are.. does the gti running gear etc fit straight on? And is it an xu or tu?

The sub frame, suspension and beams are all inter changeable between all models regardless of engine or trim level. - As in they all physically fit, however there are differences such as track control arms on base model cars and different gear rod mounts between XU and TU engined cars.

As you are looking at a 1.6 Auto, it will be a XU engine. Unsure as to what suspension these where given though. But yer, GTI set up fits any model.

just a thought i believe that the auto will have rubber mounts on the front end of the front subframe but the gti s are soliid mounted . the auto has different wishbone set up on the front so the frame will need swaping over

You will also need different front struts as the base model suspension with track control arms type struts don't have the brackets to connect the drop links to!

A 1.6 auto will most likely have the base model subframe with single point inner wishbone pick ups where the arb forms the second brace unless someone has swapped it to GTI style previously.

I believe the diesel 205 s run gti gear according to service box when looking at parts. So for sub frame and wishbones in a diesel shell may be more cost effective ?

Diesel's used control arms not wishbones

Anthony

Turbo diesels used GTi type wishbones, NA diesels used base model type TCA setup.

Funny you should say that Anthony I did see a td in the scrap yard with control arms but it's not to say it hadn't been converted

The STDT generally should have the GTI type subframe, arb & wishbone set up (although not always, right Anthony? ;)) but I've seen a few five door D trubo's in scrapyards that had the base model TCA subframe so it is luck of the draw / parts bin.
