If you can feel ridges, then it's time for a new shaft.

 

Please don't be tempted to rotate 180 degs

I can see that is shot yes.

 

If you have any means to build the material back up, turn back down and heat treat/harden again, then yes it is salvageable, if not, then just buy a kit off ebay, £100 will get you both shafts and all the bearings and seals you'll need.

already got all the seals/bearings, but I see that the shaft vary in price enormously, which I would normally steer clear of, can any on recommend a good supplier.

 

Should I replace both? (on the basis that it is always good to replace both at the same time)

 

this is the other one, which looks good to me (but as you can tell I'm no expert, no really I know it's hard to tell ).

 

There is an area that is a bit brighter than its surroundings but no difference can be felt

If you can't feel any wear with your finger nail then that second one will be fine. It's just been polished by the bearing.

Expensiveness is someone buying from a dealer in bulk, adding their cut, and selling on.

 

Neat autos is a fair price, i have used them in the past, keep looking, there are some from poland for less than 100.

Thanks for advice, decided to replace both and the quality of the parts seem fine. Pressed in and out very easily.

 

Have taken some pics but not downloaded the camera yet as soon as I have I'll post some pics.

pics with the arms pressed in, arms only have a anti-corrosion finish at present (Hydrate 80), will be priming and painting with PlastiDip in the next few days

Funny you should say that very nearly did.

 

It wasn't until the last minute I looked at the old one, measured tip to toe and set the new ones the same distance.
